.44 Rem. Mag. for black bear?
RJM any of the three you named.Usually the houndsman will have a prefernce and I would ask before getting started. Most houndsman will be there to offer advice. There was an article in American Hunter June 2006 by Ian McMurchy that in my opinion is the best article on killing bears.

Not to be a wet blanket, but take those rifles on down the hall to the appropriate forums.

I have no clue how they got there...I was posting that over on the Ruger forums and it just "disappeared" when I hit enter... I think what happened is that I had typed this into the wrong window...

My first time...

Thanks for the information on where to shoot them. I have never chased bear or hogs with dogs but from what I see here it must really be an exciting way to hunt...

Up close like this, is a JHP or cast bullet better... Keep the bullet in the game or a passthrough?

RJM again this is going to have to be answered by the houndsman. When I was pushing hounds hard I prefered hard cast, but limited my hunters shots (and sometimes their weapons). Head, spine, shoulders, watch the hounds, whether pistol or rifle. If you can keep your head (not everyone can) hard cast is the way to go. Here in our thick part of the world you have to watch for hounds and other hunters coming into the fray. Any of the three shots will drop the bear immediately and allow you to run up on him and point blank'em. If in doubt don't shoot. What starts out as fun an exciting can get expensive if you have to buy a hound because of an accident. (And houndsman are usually crazier over their hounds than they are anything else)

My suggestion for all first time hounders is to go during training season. Get out of the truck and see whats going on in the timber. Once you've experienced a few bay ups, fights and trees it will better prepare you for hunting time.

I am a lead bullet fan for revolvers so my hunting load is a 270grLHP @ 1250fps. Plenty for anything but the biggest of bears.

fredj338,
Nice bullet - what did you recover it from? I'm leaning toward a cast 300 gr. bullet as of now for black bear in WI. It's been interesting reading the many good comments on this site from those more knowledgeable than I. Thanks everyone!

That one is from wetpack test. I have only used them on deer & can't get one to stop yet!. I'll have to try a 1/4 shot & see, but it goes deep in wetpack testing, maybe time for a hog hunt.
