Bill/OregonOptimizing open irons
Anyone out there feel really strongly about modifications to standard Ruger SBH open sights that honestly make a difference? Was reading a Taffin piece and he described the factories as back on black, "as they should be."

WV HitmanI've tried a bunch. The best for me is a rear V and front GREEN fiber optic. Ruger sells the both.

SlenkAll my SBH have the front sight panted with Testors model paint a coat of white with a coat of Florissant Orange on the back of the blade, and white outline in the grove outline of the rear sight.

The HOT PINK just didn't work for him.

WhitworthI think the best thing you can do with the rear sight is replace it with a Bowen Target sight. I just painted the ramp white of the front sight blade on one of my revolvers.

I agree completely! Have them on several of my hunting revolvers and I do not believe it gets any better.

Bill/OregonThe Bowen options look good -- including the Rough Country series. I see they offer a Rough Country with the V rear, which has always tempted me. Who has used a V rear and gone back to the square notch?

tiggertateMe. The V-notch is very fast for close range but not really precise enough for the full range of distances I shoot my Redhawk. Mine was paired with the gold bead for true "express sight" look and feel. At least that's my experience. I wear glasses to see the front sight now and maybe better eyes would find it more useful. In fact, I'm waiting for delivery of a new JPoint micro dot to try on it. At some point you gotta quit fooling yourself, lol.
It wouldn't make a bad tactical setup if I didn't have it on an 8-inch barreled gun. Certainly better than some as-issued sights.
"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

Bill/OregonThanks Tigger. That seems to be the consensus -- the V is fast but definitely less accurate.

Lefteris VassiliadisYears ago I modified a Bo-Mar to work in a Redhawk.
Today, there is another alternative.

Fury01I think Elmer Keith had the definitive improvement to the Single action Big Bore handgun sight. I don't think Black on Black is "as it should be" for hunting. Great on paper.
