.38-40 deer
I took this buck on a place just down the road from my house. My 14 year old and I were sitting on the edge of a field when I heard this guy get up and bolt out of the thicket he was laying up in. The deer came by us at about warp 3 and I got a 200 grain LFN through his lungs. Shot distance was between 20 and 25 yards where he passed in front of me. I did lead him, but could have done a little more. He piled up about 125 yards further down his path.

I was shooting my Linebaugh Custom .38-40 using a bullet from Montana Bullet Works ahead of 14.0 grains of HS-6. We didn't have a scale to weigh him, but my back says he was fairly heavy.

Very nice, Hitman! Good going! That's a fine buck! That's a nice revolver. How much velocity are you getting from that load if you don't mind me asking? I may take one of my .44s out next time........ beer CONGRATULATIONS!

Of course. Do you have a doe tag? Which revolver this time?

We're allowed three bucks and five does on our license per year. So I'll just hunt until I run out of bag limit or season.

I'm thinking my 2" J frame next. Seriously, my Gallagher .45 Colt is next up to bat. That .38-40 will knock a hole through a deer.

Super good shooting with open sights. That is the hardest thing to do.
It takes me 5 minutes to even find open sights on a standing deer anymore let alone find them on a running deer.
MS, you numba one in my book! clap

You're right, either one of the Linebaugh boys turns out a very nice revolver. If you've got questions, ask. I'll answer as best I can.

Excellent thumb

Keep putting them down beer

I vote for the J-Frame 38 Special. Me and the Sarge were shooting them out to 200 yards just yesterday

Nice going! I love the ancient and overlooked calibers, and a 38-40 is definitely something I want to try before long.

My only dilemma is whether I want it in a custom revolver or perhaps a slick-handling 20" Contender carbine barrel.

Or maybe I'll ditch both of those ideas and go with a 10" Contender pistol barrel... Big Grin

Again, congrats on dropping the hammer on a very nice buck. thumb

This revolver is way cool Whitworth.

I've got some Punch bullets for it that I may play with at some point in the future. After deer season ends, I may drag out my paper and penetration board to see how this load performs in wet newsprint.
