Hi All,

I'm just wondering what is the possibility or not to have big frame pistol like Desert Eagle or similar pistol in big bore calibers like .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh, .500 linebaugh,....

Rim calibers like .357 Mag and .44 Mag work very well in this kind of pistol. I know working pressure could be a problem but for the .44 mag is 40000 CUP a little bit lower than .454 Casull. In fact some loads in .454 Casull can reach 45000 CUP in withdrawing 1.5 gr of max load. But for sure big frame pistol can handle higher pressure.

So could you explain to me why I can't have a Deset Eagle in .475 or .500 Linebaugh.

I think the limitation on the desert eagle is two fold. First, the cartridge over all length on the 475 and 500 Linebaugh is likely too long for the magazine, 1.4" case, and .40" long bullet for 1.8". The second problem would be that the most popular loads use cast bullets, and the gas operated desert eagle is incompatable with cast. One last concern would be recoil manageament. Grip shape and bore height to grip are critcle to allow one to physically handle these rounds.

Desert Eagle is available in .50 AE and .440 Corbon. If you want a hot Eagle get the .440 Corbon, it just about catches the .454 Casull, and I doubt most game would really know the difference.

pretty tough to get a rimmed cartrige to function in an auto There has to be somethin for the extractor to grab and thats why rimmless rounds headspace on front of the cartrige and why you have to taper crimp them. A properly chambered rimmed cartrige would have the rim right against the chamber and the extractor would not be able to be enguaged If someone would make you the cases in a rimmless version they probably would work.

I can agree with most of your reply.

Now we can withdraw to our big bore list .475 linebaugh and .500 Linebaugh because rim diamter is too big.

But I want to focus on .454 casull round. I we compare it to .44 mag same rim diamter.

The lenght of cartridge is 1.700" for .454 casull and 1.610" for the .44 Mag. The difference of lenght is not important at all.

We can have jacketed bullet for .454 Casull.

So what is the clue to have this round in a large frame pistol?

I have seen .475 Widley and .440 CorBon, both are great rounds but I prefer .50 AE or a .454 casull if it's workable.

The reason for the .440 Corbon is that the .44 caliber bullets have a better BC than the .50 caliber bullets which means better long range performance.

You know that I am jealous of your "baby big-bore" collection.

I am looking at a 45 win mag in the LAR Grizzly sometime in the future.

My experience with an AMT in this caliber lead me to believe that it is pretty close to the 454 casull in an auto format.

I have both .454 casull and .50 AE, from my litlle experience you can compare these rounds. Same thing with .440 CorBon and .475 Wildey. the .454 Casull has sharp heavy felt recoil, the others cartridges have more tolerable recoil.

Exept recoil all these cartridges can take nealy all animals living on Earth

I'm sure they would. But I really like that 45 win mag. And components are readily available, including factory ammo. Plus, except for the wildey version, you can shoot lead in it.

In a LAR you can fire lead bullet without problems. But now the .45 Winnie is "obsolete" most of people prefer the .50
AE over the .45 Win.

But I agree with you the .45 Win is a great round with heavy bullets like a 300 gr bullet.

The 45 Win Mag is a great round but it is nothing compared to the 454. It can't be loaded with heavy weight bullets because the case taper will not allow the bullets to be seated deep enough.

Case capacity of the 45 Win Mag is a bit less then the 45 Colt. In strong revolvers such as the Rugers, the 45 Colt will actually outperform the 45 Win Mag because it can be loaded with heavier bullets.

When both are loaded in the T/C Contender, they are basically twins. Much like the 44 Rem Mag and the 44 Auto Mag.

The 454 will add a full 300 fps to any bullet weight compared to the 45 Win Mag.

It is a good round, far better then its popularity shows but its no better then the heavy loaded 45 Colts.

This is an interesting concept. The only problems I see would be:

-If a Desert Eagle barrel could be rebored to .452" or if a custom(if possible) would be needed.

-If heavy enough recoil springs could be found to work with the 454's higher pressure.

-Most of the good hunting bullets for the 454 are either hard cast or bullets with lead exposed bases. Except the fine Speer 300gr Uni-Core SP or 300 gr XTP-MAG. These bullets do require long over all lengths though.

I've been working on a little project of my own. Since I have a huge supply of bullets for my 50 A.E. and also shoot the 7.21 Tomahawk round I have been developing a wildcat of my own. I take the Tomahawk case and shorten it to 1.4" and neck it up to .500". It looks like the 440 CorBon's big brother. I will be designing it for the Encore pistol where it should produce 2300-2400 fps with the 325 gr Speer(far to high for good bullet performance but I may possibly change bullet diameter to .510" for a better selection of bullets.

Have also looked into a round using the full length Lazzeroni short mag case blown out and necked up to .500".

Hopefully there will be bullets in the air soon, have to see what happens!
