500 s/w mag

got this off of graybeard site,500 s/w mag case length-1.625.
275 barnes x bullet-1662fps
400 hawk-1676 fps
440 hardcast-1625 fps
if these are accurate that thing going to kick at full power [Eek!]

the 500 linebaugh max case length is 1.610. lets hope these are accurate,i know i want one ,who else [Big Grin]

And I tought I wanted a 475 long. This looks like It'll be a beast. I'd like to see a picture of the gun. I may have to sell my 44automag to get one. I wish I was done with Engineering school already.

is this a true 50. or .510-.512 like linebaugh anybody know? weighs 70 oz -6 lbs,this thang is a train, with a scope your looking at 7 lbs better start eating your wheaties

And what's with making a brand new cartridge? They could've just chambered it in .500 Linebaugh Long Max. But noooo, then they wouldn't get to put their name on the stupid round. On second thought, I think I'll pass and get a .500 LB Long Max from John him self.

Why not getting both. The .50 S&W Mag is "just" a long .50 AE case with a rim [Big Grin]

from what I have read.

I have checked on hawk website have found any 400 gr bullet caliber .500/.501 may be a new one made only for the new S&W.

But then I don't see S&W making a .480 Ruger anytime during the life of the universe...

Maybe MRI will make a gun for it...

I've had some bad luck with Smith in the past, so I will be quite cautious about getting one chambered for a round that powerful. The SRH can take the pounding of the .454, as can the FA's..but can S&W make something like that? Only time & a crap load of hot loads will tell...

I called S&W customer service yesterday. When asked him was the releas date on the X frame. He responded what X frame are you talking about? When I told him what I know, then he changed his tune and said to watch the SHOT show [Big Grin]

. He wanted to know where I got the info because I had more than him [Big Grin]

(Isn't the internet great) He said that lots of time they find out after the public release most of the final specs. They should hit dealer shelves if all goes right in mid year I was told.

70 oz is 4.375 lb. That's about the same weight as my BFR 45-70. With that said, my 405's at 1750 are slightly painful, but controllable. It would be nice if MRI would make a maximum length frame instead of the 3" window for the 45-70.

Cas, the velocity was actually 1751, but I rounded down. I have a Chrony. It's a low end chrono, but I've shot it placed right behind another chrono and the clocked speeds were the same. The chrony was 10yds in front of the muzzle so It wasn't muzzle blast. I got a nice steady increase in velocity with an increase in powder. The powder was WC680 and needed a Fed 215M primer. The cases would either fall out of the gun when tipped up or needed just a slight touch from the ejector. I've shot a 1.75" group with rem factory 300JHP's at 50 yds. The cast bullets accuracy has been a little hit and mis with the best so far just under 3" at 50yds(350 @ 1400), and some going as large as 13". I honed out the cylinder throats from .456 to .458, but haven't got back to the range yet to see if I did any good or harm.

Those vels sound reasonable to me. I shoot a 12" Encore, .50 Alaskan, case 2.090", and it pushes a 475 gr. at 1675.9 fps (which is nowhere near max I might add) and a 450 gr. jacketed at 1727.7 fps. So, 440 at 1625 and a 405 at 1750 out of a smaller case sounds reasonable. But, can the .50 S&W shoot a 750 gr. A-Max at any speed? Talk about FUN [Eek!]

You missed my point. No one shoots a 275 in a .50 caliber. Why would a 275 be slower than much heavier bullets? It probably ISN'T a 275...it's a typo I think.

I think that it is X bullet out of all copper. The pressure might be as high as you can go at that velocity. Midway USA lists a 275 grain 510 diameter barnes XPB diameter bullet.

No because the A-Max has a diamter .510/.511 and the .500 S&W .500/.501. The a-Max is too long for a revolver's cylinder [Razz]

A large charge of slow powder isn't as efficiant pushing a light bullet as it is a heavy one.

Or it could be these are just "normal people" loads.
A 500 Special type load. It would seem stupid to introduce a 500 magnum without a 500 special, especially if they hope to sell more than the odd handfull of these guns.

Check out Cor-Bon's website, http://www.corbon.com, they have developed the new S&W 500 ammo and it is for sale. A 275gr Barnes X at 1665 fps, a 400gr Hawk SP at 1675 fps, and a 440gr HC Cast Performance at 1625 fps.

Seems to actually live up to the hype. I'll wait for chrono results first, though.

And wow, those "reduced" loads are almost as powerful as full-power .454 rounds. Just 25grs lighter. Hmm, thinks it's gonna kick? [Smile]

Probably the 700H&H principle. Supposedly, H&H financed the whole project by selling ammo to collectors. Cheap guys like me will satiate their desire for the gun by just buying a couple representative cartridges. Besides, that thing's gonna be heavy!
