What method/model makes the tightest crimp?
I have a 50 AE (AR-15 upper 16") and am setting up to reload for it. I know it will try it's best to dislodge the 300gr IMI HP and the 350gr Hawk HP bullets and don't want that to happen. Who makes/has the tightest crimp? Has anyone had any issues in reloading the 50AE that you know of?

This IS a taper crimp proposition. I would crimp in a separate station (if you are using a progressive) as your crimp will be much more consistent.

As far as the dies, i have used Reddings, RCBS & Hornady. I would give the edge to Redding.

Redding's crimp dies have no peer IMHO. I have both their taper crimp and roll crimp for my .44 mag. I wanted to compare the crimp strength of the different crimps on lead and jacketed bullets. Using the taper crimp on jacketed bullets has worked well. In fact I tried to pull the slugs with an inertia bullet puller - and bent the handle. I had to shoot the rounds because that was the only way to get the bullets out! However, on cast bullets the taper crimp was a POS. Bullets jumped noticeably from recoil. Remember this was on a revolver. On my auto pistols the redding taper crimp is excellent and highly recommendable.

David,

Try Reddings "Profile Crimp" for these. Will make a big difference.

Mike,

The Redding profile crimp die is all I use for my revolver cartridges. Great die. Buying the Redding Taper crimp die for my .44 was for comparison purposes only. Sometimes it is best to stick with what is known to work!
