DemonicalRuger no longer lists a 480?
I've just caught wind of this. I am baffled that Ruger would discontinue production of the .480 SRH.
I have the 7-1/2" barreled grey and I love the gun. IMHO it is the perfect wilderness defense revolver.
I suppose this will put a damper on ammo availability also.

WhitworthHas anyone bothered contacting Ruger about this? It baffles me that it isn't a more popular caliber.

Demonical Whitworth I checked the Ruger site today and they only have the .44 Mag and .454 Casull in the SRH. They shoulda kept the .480!! Dammit!!

I must stockpile brass!!

The lady on the phone said she got a message from her supervisor stating that they've halted manufacturing the Super Redhawk in 480 Ruger due to extraction problems.
She said they will hault production until the extraction problem is fixed, but they have no idea on when or if they will start manufacturing 480s.
Fired cases do stick in my SRH but I didn't think it was a big deal.

WhitworthDon't know how I overlooked that......sorry Fumbler!

Demonical Fumbler if that's the case Ruger ought to provide a note or something on their website that explains that.
I guess we .480 brethren owe it to each other to write/call Ruger and let them know we want this fine caliber to continue!
I will follow up with a letter to Ruger.

WhitworthI think I will join your letter writing campaign.

FumblerIt's ok Whitworth, I may have missed it if I didn't write it myself.
I agree with Demonical, Ruger should put out a press release of some sort...but maybe they haven't done it because it would detract some people who would otherwise buy the leftover 480s.

WhitworthI think I'm going to buy another one with a 7.5-inch barrel......

WhitworthJust had to go check the Ruger web site to see for myself.......no evidence that the .480 ever existed......what a bummer.......
Is Taurus still building a .480 Raging Bull?? I hope they start to build them again.....

scr83jpWhile attending the Shooting Sports Fair at Raahauges in Norco ,CA I fired the Ruger SRH in 454 casull and the 480 .The 480 stung my hand enough that I'll never fire that weapon again, can't understand why Ruger didn't put muzzle brakes on both of their SRH revolvers and many who checked & fired them said the same thing .S&W didn't make the mistakes of Ruger when they came out with their big bore handguns with muzzle brakes.

makeminestainlessYou would be suprised what a difference good grips will make. The 480 is a pussycat up against the 454!

Ruger didn't put a muzzle brake on the SRH because I wouldn't have bought it.

There's an imense difference in S&W's magnums and the 480 Ruger. The 480 is no more than a fat 44mag while the 500 and 460 are ballistic monsters operating at centerfire rifle pressures. I don't think a muzzle brake in a 480 would even be effective because the 480 might not generate enough muzzle blast.
Really though, are you sure you have your info correct?
The 480 does not recoil heavier or faster than the 454 Casull.
Look at Chuck Hawks' data:
454 Casull 300gr@1650fps = 38.6ft-lbs recoil energy/27.9 fps recoil velocity
480 Ruger 325gr@1330fps = 23.1 ft-lbs recoil energy/21.2 fps recoil velocity
I've shot Freedom Arms revolvers in 454 and they recoiled significantly more than my SRH in 480. The recoil was fast and very harsh compared to the 480's slow hard push.
I've got Hogue Tamer grips on my SRH. I like these more than factory because they fill my hand more. However, factory grips are very usable.
EDITED TO ADD:
scr83jp, I may have jumped the gun on my post. You didn't explicitly mention what you thought about the 454 compared to the the 480 and my post assumes that you thought the 480 hurt more than the 454. If that is not the case then forget I said anything.

WhitworthI have to agree, the .454 recoils significantly more than my .480. I have two identical 7.5-inch SRHs - a .480 and a .454, and even when loaded with 410 grain Buffalo Bore loads in the .480 it just torques in your hand whereas the Casull slaps the hand rather hard. I too am glad that Ruger didnćt put a brake on the SRH. You just have to practice a lot with these monsters to master them. They can be admitedly unpleasant to shoot. Or you can load them down........
