475 linebaugh first timer loads
Hello,
I just got 475 built by John Linebaugh and need some light loads to start out on.
Thanks
John

You could use some of the milder 480 loads to start with. If you want something really mild, try 7 gr of Unique under a 400 gr cast bullet for about 600 fps, and you can increase it up to 10 gr for about 900 fps.

A good midrange load by 475L levels is 21 gr H-110 under a 400 gr cast for 1200 fps.

If you go to the Sixgunner forums you will find a whole bunch of loads for your .475 including all of John Taffin's loads. John Linbaugh also has loads listed on his website and Kelly Broast from Performance cast bullets also has a bunch of .475 loads. wave

I shoot 8.0 grains of WW231 behind a 400 grain cast bullet. This is a very mild load giving me a velocity of about 825 fps. I also load 12.0 grains of 700-X behind a .45 ACP case for 1890 fps. Makes a heck of a hollow-point.

Congrats on the Linebaugh conversion. I'm waiting on a .500 currently.

I bought my BFR last fall and have never shot a light load. I found the 400 gr. Lee extremely accurate, sometimes going into 1/2" at 50 yd's but averaging around an inch. I can hit pop cans all day at 100 yd's from sandbags. I have kept them on a small steel swinger at 400 yd's from Creedmore. I have just finished my first brick of Fed 155 primers. Don't wimp out and look for slow plinking loads, the gun is just not that bad and is really fun to shoot. You will get used to it. All my other guns have been sitting in the safe since I got this one. My best loads with this boolit are 15 grs. of HS-6 for my lightest load and 26.5 grs. of 296 for my all around hunting and target load. I just can't put the thing down.
I have made several boolit molds for it and all shoot great.
I started with .480 brass but could not get the accuracy or power from them so I gave most away.
The funny thing about the gun is that when some friends are over to shoot, they refuse to shoot it. I consider that good because it leaves more loads for me to shoot.
You have a wonderful gun. Don't be afraid of it. After while it will not feel any worse then a .44 or a .45. Have fun and keep us posted.

MS Hitman,
Your .45 ACP case as a projectile load sounds interesting. Have you tested it much? It must be one hell of a short range varmint load! Do you crimp them with a taper crimp die? Please, tell us more.

The idea is really the brianchild of Jim Taylor. He told me about the load and them gave me some as well as loading data. The .45 ACP case makes a mess of whatever it hits and has been used to shoot IHMSA chickens down at 50 meters. The main drawback to this load is it prints so much higher than anything else. I wished I would have used it on an emu at Mark Hampton's place, but didn't have any on me at the time. Sometimes it is necessary to use the sizing die to swage it down to fit in the FA chambers. Once a case is used for this load, it some remain segregated from the others as case wall weakening may occur from the loading step mentioned above.

Thanks for the replies. Does the hornady brass work any better than cut down 45-70 brass?

I shoot a FA, so it works better for me. Also, time being what it is, I am able to spend it loading and shooting rather than making cases.
