Folks--just wondering whether anyone could recommend a good SWC lead bullet for the .45 Colt that is commercially available through the usual retail/mail order outlets--I don't cast my own. I have a S&W 25-5, so I'm looking for something about 250 gr., limited to velocity in the 900-1000 fps range. The soft swaged stuff (e.g., Speer) result in leading at that velocity, so I'm looking for something a little harder.

I use the RCBS 270 SAA as cast and sold by Western Bullet Company. Good quality and very fairly priced IMO. It weighs a hair over 280 grs and shoots very well. I load it in the range you are considering using HS-6 in a couple of Smith's and a couple of Ruger's.

+1 on the RCBS 270 SAA. It's available from Montana Bullet Works as well. It works well over Alliant 2400 too.

in the use of cast fit is always the trump
check out all dimensions in your gun then choose a boolit accordingly
hardness may or may not not a cure for your particular issue

The Keith or the LBT style are excellent, somewhere around 250-260 grs is best in a S&W & you might need them a bit bigger than .452".

If I find something better than I've used so far, I'll probably be buyibng them in 500-bullet lots, just as I do with the stuff I buy now.
