Tanoosewhich scope mounts
I use a ruger super redhawk in 454 casull with peep sights. I plan on using a scope next season,a leupold 2 0r 4 fixed power. My question is can i use the rings supplied with the gun that mount to the integral bases.I was hoping that i could otherwise i was looking at the wegland bases.Hoping to get some suggestions hear. Thanks Tanoose

WhitworthThe standard rings from Ruger don't interfere with the stock sights, but I don't know if they will with a peep sight.

TanooseI dont believe they will as long as i put the peep all the way down. But my concern is the rings are they good enough, strong enough, or would i have to worry about them loosening from recoil

WhitworthI have used those rings on my custom .475 Linebaugh SRH for years, and after literally thousands of full-bore loads (420s at 1,350 fps) through it, they never once loosened. Even after falling out of two tree stands they never loosened. I wouldn't worry about that at all.
As a side note, I had a set of Redfields on it originally, and I deswtroyed them in short order, necessitating the move to the Ruger rings.

Yup, no reason to go taller. If the scope fails, you will have to remove it to use your irons anyhow.

TanooseYeah but it only takes a few seconds to turn the screws and remove the scope so i can use the sights.

x-caliberTanoose, I think what you are saying is that you want to make sure that the scope rings that came with the gun would be high enough to mount your scope without removing the rear (non-factory) sight and keep the sights, "sighted in." If so, I completely understand and agree with this system. I have a couple of rigs set up this way:
Electronic optics are mounted on both but the iron sights are sighted in as well. That way if I have a failure in the field, I can remove the optic without having to end my hunt
No problem with going higher if the rings that came with the gun won't allow you to keep your peep sight installed. You only need to buy one ring, just keep the taller of the two that you have now (use it for the rear) and buy the next tallest size from Midway for the front.

K20350I loved the stock rings on my SRH. I had to periodically tighten them though or they would shake loose on the frame side. At the time I was shooting 100-200 rds per week on sillouetts. Unlike others shooting I used full house loads. I used a 4x leupold and it is still kicking after untold thousand rounds. I will say the 4x to me seemed too much for hunting though. I used a 2x Burris for that.

I keep mine really tight, so it may take a little more effort to remove them! That said, they don't interfere with the iron sights in the least, so upon removal you can use them without a problem.
