S&W 629 Stealth Hunter

I have been lusting over a S&W Model 629 Stealth Hunter lately. Anybody own one of these. Any words of widsom on them?

I've been looking at those too. It should "carry" alot easier than the Stealth Hunter. How does yours shoot Alex?

I am working up some different loads, but the first load I have tried shoot very good. I was on the bench at the indoor range shooting at 25 yards, and I got a small ragged hole in the target, I need to move out to 50 and 75 yards and see what it will do. But I am waiting for the weather to get better to go to the outdoor range.

So far I like the gun.

Personally, I just won't get past those locks on the side. I relegate my S&W collection to the older models.

I have the Light Hunter in 41 mag. What you posted is a variation of that revolver, with the later required lock and "dogleg" down the left side. I too, much prefer the earlier revolvers without the lock and "proud metal" on the left side of the firearm.

I have a Light Hunter with Lock and about 1,000 trouble free rounds down the Tube.I collect older Smiths ,and this shoots as well or better than most.

It's just an asthetic issue. I have no doubts that it is a really fine piece -- it is a Smith & Wesson afterall!

Mine...a S&W 629 PC Stealth Hunter 6" .44 Magnum, I am really in love with it. Cost Me in My country u$2000. Ball-crane lock, Factory Magnaport, Trigger stop,removable front sight (Dovetail) You can use any sight sistem (Leupy, red dot, laser sight) without taking off the factory rear sight and can use or not the 5 removable counter weights, 1 MOA meters guaranted

Lock don't bother me either, I have never had a problem with them in any off my S&W 460's, 500's or 44 Mags, or any other Smith's I have owned with them.

Oh, it's simply a matter of principal and preference. Just like those stupid cross-bolt safeties on lever guns. It's gone just as fast as I can install the kit to plug the hole. If someone comes up with a similar device for the S&W I will consider buying them again. Hanging the individual(s) responsible for the lock from a tree would be that much better.

I also have a Model 629 Light Hunter.

I don't like the lock hole but haven't had any problem with it.

I am working up some loads using Vihtavuori N-110 podwer. Does anyone use this podwer ?

Mine is the original 41 mag hunter. It looks similar but without the weights. I have to admit that since I have had it so long, I did not pay nearly that much for it. Here it is:

I'd sell it, but I don't know what I could get for it.

An older, non IL, 629 Lt Wt Hunter in .44 magnum with Herrett stocks. This one was so accurate that I later bought another but the 625 .45 Colt model. Two buddies each have them, one a .41 mag the other another 629 .44 mag.

ALL of them are accurate, function flawlessly, etc. GREAT guns.

Don't care for the current models...too weird looking, as well as the IL.

I haven't shooted this revolver alot since I have it from few weeks. I have tried 19 to 21gr with both the XTP and the hard cast gas checked bullets.

I can't measure speeds but loads in the Vihtavuori manual looks a bit hot to me.

More than just an astheric issuse as there have been S&W revolvers with the locks to "lock themselves" when being fired. Not a good situation IMHO. I like MS Hitman also concentrate my S&W collection on pre-lock models

29-2 are beautiful revolvers, pity here in Italy it's hard to find one in good condition and prices are very high.

Whitworth, I have never has an issue with the locks on any of my S&W's. One of my 500 mag has over 3000 rounds, and it has never locked by itself. I have had 5 of the S&W 500 Mags, and never a problem. I have had 5 of the S&W 460 Mag, and never a problem. My 629, 640, 442 and 686 all with locks, and I shoot the hell out of them, never a locking issue.

So many guns with locks and not one problem.

For me it is not a fear of it locking up. This is the first I have heard of that "problem" existing. For me it is purely aesthetic.
