AglifterChanging the barrel on a 500 S&W
I currently have a 4" version. I think what I'd like is a 6" version w.o. the ports, but w. the full under lug -- I like a fairly muzzle heavy gun -- the 8" version actually feels pretty decent to me, so I'm thinking about shooting one of those for awhile, and then, possibly, cutting it down.
As I understand it, the 500s are built similar to the old Dan wessons, w. shrouded barrels -- can they be cut down?

LeonardCI'd love to know the answer to this! To be taken with a grain of salt!: I followed another thread on this subject and S&W has a special tool to work the "nut"...the tool is not available to us common folks. Seems there is some special torque needed to secure the barrel...maybe a few secret special words muttered during the process.
If we can do it with DW's, we should be able to do it with the S&W if we had the tool.

Redhawk1Not many if any Gunsmiths want to touch a S&W X-frame. The ones I have talked to recommend sending the gun back to S&W. Now you can give Jack Huntington a call and see what he can do for you.
The best thing I think that can be done is, sell your 4 inch and look for a 6 inch, but they were made in a limited run, and most if not all have compensators on them, which is actually the barrel nut.
The only X-frames not compensated, which are 500 Mags, are the 2 1/2 inch version and the John Ross 5 inch version.
But like I said, Call Jack Huntington. (530)268-6877
