One of my hunting partners shot a medium sized six poiner today with his 1911.
230 gr federal hydro shock at 20 yards took him in the neck broke the neck dropped him right there. Left big exit hole.

I killed a tom turkey a few days ago with my 1911.
While they "ain't" no 44 Mag, they make a pretty good Field Pistol.
Also, I needed a new trash burning barrel at camp, so I used the 1911 as a "drill" to shoot some vent holes in the barrel.
A LOT faster than a Black and Decker...

This is good to know. I was carrying my Kimber with 230 Hydro-shoks because my brother wanted to borrow the .44. I was concerned how this bullet would penetrate. Sounds like they should be sufficient for 25-30yds that I would use it.
I didn't get an opportunity to exercise the 45 but my brother used the .44 mag Ruger SB Hunter to finish a buck that he broke the back on with his .270 rifle. Shot it from about 30 yds quartering in from behind the shoulder. I found the .240 Hornady XTP under the hide at the base of the neck on the offside. Didn't weigh it but there wasn't much left of it in front of the canalure. I was surprised it stayed in the animal at that range. Haven't chrono'd the load but it is a max load of H110 (~24gr) so it should be moving along pretty good. I think next year I will go with the 300gr XTP or a 300gr cast bullet. This pistol with a 4x scope will put five XTPs in a 3" group at 100yds so I want to make sure I have sufficient penetration out that far if the opportunity arises.

buffybrMany years ago, when I had more hair and it was brown, I shot this spot and stalk black bear with my 1911 .45 acp and a wheel weight cast 230 gr SWC bullet.
Now I read that the Colorado Div of Wildlife says that a .45 acp isn't powerful enough to kill a bear. What do they know???

I've shot deer with hot 45s and 454s. I have found that at those speed the hollow points expand too much or just disappear. I've had better luck with jacketed flat points. They hold together better. The flat points even seem to expand too much sometimes. A shot through the lungs with a hollow point is fine but I've have hollow points not get thru the shoulder. Cripples it enough to catch up to it and finish it. Nice broad side shots aren't always an option. Hell, its almost a 1/2 inch hole, why do we need a lot of expansion? I would rather have the slug stay together.

prof242I have to agree with you on some of the points. I've used my 1911 with hard cast 250gr flat noses (this thing seems to feed anything) and my .45LC with heavier bullets of the same configuration and seem to have good success.

I've only shot one deer (a
very large northern doe) with one of my 1911's, and that was with a H&G #68 200 cast swc load, which had been previously clocked at 1000 fps. In through the right side ribs, out through the left side ribs tight up behind the shoulder. Nice clean holes to leak, but it wasn't needed. She never moved after the hit.
