bfrshooter.45 Vaquero
I made a new, higher front sight, undercut so I could see it better. I grabbed a box of loads and took a file down to my range.
I had three different boolits so I could reach a happy medium for deer hunting, 300 gr Lee, 325 gr Lyman and a 330 gr from my home made mold. All with 21.5 gr of 296.
I had a heck of a time with all of them. I was even missing the paper at 50 yards with a few shots, no groups at all. Spray and pray was all I had. And all of you have seen my previous groups of almost one hole at 50 yards.
It finally hit me about halfway through---I HAD LOADED WITH WW PRIMERS for a primer test and forgot. My normal primer is the Federal 150.
Patterns were about five times larger then the groups I normally get.
I had suggested before that the WW primer might work in the .45 case but this was as bad as any magnum primer test I had done.
Many, many loads were worked with all mag primers in the .44 and .45 over the years and I never got them to shoot for beans. I did not think the WW primer had as much pressure as other mag primers but it looks like I was wrong. I only move to LP mags with the .475 and 45-70.
Now I am worried that I filed the sight too much and might have to make another. I have been thinking of making a ramp type front sight so I can change blades for different boolits.

MS HitmanJim,
Go back and look at the primer box, if I am not mistaken it will say for both normal and magnum loads. They are hot primers.

Thats what i would do...I had a vaquero in 44 mag.& it shot 12 inch low groups, traded it off and never looked back or looked at another vaquero, good luck!Lifes to short for inaccurate handguns, theres plenty out there that will strike matches....

Woodrow SVaquero= fixed sights= 1 bullet wt = 1 load. Thats why I don't have but 1 of them.....a Reeder custom Doc Holiday in 45 Colt. Too limited.

Very true but what I have read is that they are not quite as hot as a full mag.
Oh well, back to square one. No more primer tests.
