Been wondering what the rest of you guys are doing w/the huge guns for handling/carrying afield and range. We've all seen those YouTube where a big gun sails over the shooters shoulders to the back 40ac.

Right now, I won't let others shoot my big'uns for fear that they'll over-react/drop it. I've searched the custom builders for barrelband swivel mounts for slings w/o success unless its for chromemoly. Most of mine are Stainsless. I seen one that sells lanyards which is better than nothing but still a project for the average individual.

I've looked at the UM split ring band but don't think its stury enuff to risk/trust.

What are you nimrods doing?

bfrshooter has a sling on his .45/70 BFR.......where are you bfrshooter??

Off-topic but I envy you guys out VA/WV way w/easy access to good gunsmiths. The few that have survived out here are workloaded up for months and don't really welcome sling/lanyard hole drilling/tapping nickle/dime work ~ not sure about our local blacksmith ~ may sound him out.

My main gunsmith is out your way, not here! I do have a great local gunsmith, but the one I trust implicitly is in California.......

OK, I am here. This is how I sling my revolvers. I do my own work and found the 6' utility sling from Midsouth is perfect. You can push out against the sling for a steadier hold but it DOES NOT help recoil reduction. If you can't handle the gun the sling will not help. It is great for a carry with the grip in hand and give piece of mind from a tree stand. The 45-70 has a band on front too so I can sling it across my back when dragging a deer. I use a shoulder holster plus the sling for the smaller guns and need to get one to fit the 45-70.

I don't use slings on any of my big handguns. I like a good bandoleer holster, weather custom made or bought for the gun.

I tried the sling thing and found it to be a pain in the ass. The holster keeps the gun out of the way and not hanging around like a sore thumb. Slings are for rifles.

Thanks for the inputs ~ have our bandit leather making up a bandoleer for most of my field excursions. I'd like a sling/lanyard for intermediate/sometimes use w/primary use to tie/secure it to my otherwise friends necks just in case of it getting away. I had a 458 WinMag get away from me when shooting off a bench ~ once, so I know it 'can' happen. It was a Ruger #1 and I was ready for it ~ still, it leaped from my clutches rotated axially 180* and fell right back into my clutched hands ~ upside down. I'd like to think that no one noticed.

Ken Kelly at Magnaport has always done sling swivel studs on revolvers as has SSK Industries. Check out both their sites.

I do like the idea of a lanyard, particularly if you are in a tree stand. You never know when you may fall asleep and drop your handgun.........

Mighty expensive iron to drop on the ground ~ even moreso w/optics ~

Just a bit of research found thet Bowen has lanyards in stock now and sportsmanguide has a close out on new military issues too.

The front band is an Uncle Mikes for a lever gun. Just have to get the right size. I don't use it unless I need to get the gun out of the way.
Redhawk must be wired in the stand!
I doze off and want my revolver on a sling. It is great when stalking too because the gun hangs below waist level and I keep my hand on the grip. If you need both hands, just leave it go.
I don't like to have the gun in a holster when hunting. I had to stoop down once when I did that and the gun fell out. I grabbed it before it hit the rocks on the ground. I left the snap on the holster undone. A gun in a holster is like stalking a deer with the arrow in the quiver. You are not ready and to try a fast draw on a deer is useless. They have not been taught to stand and watch you.

BFRshooter, you need to hunt more. I go in the woods to hunt not sleep. I keep my guns in my hands not in the holster. Holsters are for carrying my handguns.

When stalking, I carry my handgun in my hand. When on a stand, my handgun is in my hand. Going in and out of my stand, my handgun is in my holster. When carrying or dragging an animal out, my handgun is in the holster.

Over 25 years of handgun hunting, I never dropped my handgun.

But if it works for you, by all means use a sling.

Well with way over 360 deer kills, mostly with archery, muzzle loaders and handguns, I have dozed off with deer under me! I never get excited. Deer are too easy. I have let my bow down on the rope and just sat and watched deer under me because I did't want to butcher. They bump into my bow.
I will not even archery hunt without a bow sling on my wrist.
Tracking deer in snow still has my revolver hanging from a sling with my hand on the grip. There is a level of comfort there. The big BFR's are heavy.

Even with the guns holstered, the sling is still over my shoulder. I won't be without one.

My 10" BFR w/elite 3200 will fit w/the front sight removed as the muzzle will stick out about 0.5". If one opens the holster a lil', the front sight wouldn't be a problem and if the logo is a problem, laundry mark it. The reasons I went w/it is 1. have a smith 2. price and more importantly, w/o a bunch of narrow straps to twist/bind/snag like most bandoleers. Of course for the purist w/a few $'s more, its available in leather.


Am having a custom leather bandoleer being built for my non-scoped revolver.

Even with the guns holstered, the sling is still over my shoulder. I won't be without one.

Better look again, I have this one for my 10 in BFR 45-70 with my Leupold 2 X scope and it works great.

If I ever did, my gun goes back into my holster, but 99% of the time, no I do not nodded off. I wait all year long not to go in the woods to sleep.

I called them, and that rig thst you posted the link to goes for about $130.00 when all is said and done, and takes about 2 weeks to make. You have to give them measurements as well. I really like the cartridge loops!

Thats 'bout the same as a custom crafted one ~ pprobably better off doing what I did. Should be ready soon tho ~

I use a TC shoulder holster for the 10" scoped contender for my .475 and SRH. It is not big enough for the 45-70. Thats why I wondered about one for the super 14 contender from Uncle Mikes. It is only $32.28 from Midsouth.

The best naps in the world are in a treestand. But when I nap, I put my pistol in my holster or on the seat of the bigger stands, just like I do with my rifle, shotgun or muzzleloader. You can always hang them on your bowhanger.

I don't like nylon holsters. They never fit the gun right, I use custom leather holsters or holsters made for the gun I have. Plus nylon holsters look like crap in my opinion.

On the subject of holsters, have any of you used Quiethide Holsters? They aren't nylon, and the actually fit the gun right. I just had one built for my Contender and Dave does a great job.





This particular hoster is an open ended verticle rig so I can use different length barrels in the same hoster. The barrel that's on there in the picture is a 12" Hunter with a Bushnell Elite 2-6x.

He makes the holster to fit your gun, however it is setup. It only cost $90 and he had it done in just over 2 weeks from the time I first talked to him about it.

Check out his site. He makes mostly bandolier styles, but he will make you whatever you want within the capabilities of his machines.

I never liked the look of his holsters. Just a personal preference thing.
