one less prick
Nail this little prick with my Sig 226 while out quail hunting in the Texas Panhandle. They have shot three others off this ranch earlier in the year.A while back one of the dogs got it twice in one day.

Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Porkys are not tough to kill. That stick he is next to would have been enough.

We have lots of them up here. They are all over. Now I think they are too stupid to kill.

Too bad dogs are too stupid to leave the things alone.

When I was about 12, I tried to kill one with my Daisy 880. I think I had to shoot the poor thing 30 times before it finally died. It made the most pitiful cries and squeals. This was the first and last porcupine that I ever killed. Since then, I have a hard time justifying killing a critter that has no chance of escaping you.

I was going to give your post a rating, but it won't let me rate anything that low.

I know in some areas, porkies can become a real nuisance, and need to be culled a bit, but there certainly is not any sport in killing an animal that moves about 1/4 mph. I really like shooting coyotes, prarie dogs and rockchucks, so it is not like I am some PETA member. I have a friend who is also an avid varmiter, who was with a couple of friends who hopped out of their truck to beat a porcupine with a tire iron, while laughing the whole time. This episode kind of made my friend sick to his stomach.

Around here porkys are considered the only animal that you can kill with a stick in a survival situation. They are harmless to most animals except some curious cows and dumb dogs. Certainly not a trophy, and nothing to be proud of killing, kind of makes me a little sick actually. I spent a half hour with my daughter last year videoing one in a tree....it was thrilling for her to be close to a wild animal and a way to teach a little love of nature. She learned what makes an animal a rodent, which animals it was related to and how it defends itself. We brought a couple quills home for her to show a friend. I think I like the gentle hunters more than the hunters who have to kill everything they see.

All of the animals we hunt are a lot dumber then us. Ive shot whitetail standing 25 yards in front of me Ive walked up on moose turkey blackbear bison and just about every other animal out there. If i had to hold off on killing everything someone else thought was cute id have to quit hunting. Ill continue to shoot them when i see them and by the way Cagarychef they taste pretty dammed good in a stew.

Lloyd I bet they do taste good! If they are anything like beaver i'd eat them no prob. I'd also kill them for stew or if I had some other use in mind like decorating some custom moccasins. I've no problem killing to use something.....I just don't like killing for fun that's all.

The smell alone is enough for me to leave them alone. I guess I should try one in a stew. I see them all over.

I shoot them on sight. They do great damage to building ect. I find my 416 does a good job on them.

Lloyd,

I've never shot golfers, but if you recommend it; I may try once the greens open back up. Think I ought to take a .500 Linebaugh for the close shots?

If ignorance is bliss; there are some blissful sonofaguns around here. We know who you are, so no reason to point yourselves out.

We hunt a ranch in western Nebraska and the rancher told us, "you see them fat bastards you shoot them on sight". We dont have them around here but I guess out there calves will usually check out the fat bastards and end up with a snout full of quills that usually get infected.

GO TEXAS!!!

They used to much more abundant here than they are now. Supposed to be rather good eating, and of course the quills are prized for decorating brain-tanned buckskin clothing and other Native American equippage.
An interesting thing about porcupines is that they are among the very filthiest animals on the planet because they cannot clean themselves, and grow a lifelong fauna of microbial life that makes a quill puncture highly prone to nasty infection.

There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.
