.475 SRH broke a set of rings.......

Whitworth.475 SRH broke a set of rings.......
While chronographing today, we noticed that the .475 Linebaugh Super Redhawk of mine, was printing high at 50 yards with the red dot and a center mass hold. Upon closer examination, we noticed that the whole assembly had shited forward. We (bfrshooter and I) removed the Ultradot, and discovered that the studs that prevent the rings from shifting forward had sheared off. The mighty .475 claimed it's first set of rings. Have to order a set from Ruger on Monday........

bfrshooterI figured out how to fix the rings so we will have a spare set. These were Redfield rings.
I have the Burris base on my SBH and had to use a front extension ring. With just a Bushnell red dot on it, I sheared the front twist in lug off. They sent me a new on but I drilled and tapped the broken one for a scope screw and silver soldered it together. It will never break again.
Makes you wonder how some scopes hold up to the forces created.
Put one of those big, heavy, variable scopes on a hard kicker and you will have a problem.
Always use the lightest scopes or red dots you can find, never try to add weight to the top of a handgun to reduce recoil.

WhitworthThose Redfield rings were quite tall. They are the same height (or thereabouts) as Ruger's tall handgun rings, and I am going to order the lowest ones that they have -- which in 30 mm are the medium height rings.

mr.peppersounds like what happened to me the rings held up ok just the "ears" that held the millet rings to the base broke they were on opposite ends as well right front and left rear broke it may have been from incorrect mounting or just the 480 was to stout for that type of setup.

bfrshooterI would never use the Millet rings for a hard kicker. With a Weaver type base I think the Warne rings are best.
I have even had good luck with the rings that come with the Ultra Dot and other red dots. Maybe the light aluminum takes some of the stress off.

mr.pepperi had a bushnell trophy reddot scope held up just fine but was 30mm rings that came with it
so i got a weaver style base and tried the millets for shizz&giggles they worked good on my 45/70 so why not try them on my 480
to my suprise the lugs just didnt hold

WhitworthThese big kickers really test the strength of components. The Ruger rings look to be a whole lot stronger than the Redfields they will be replacing. But, we'll see!

WhitworthMy brother-in-law has a .480 SRH with an Utradot 30 mounted on top with the Ruger rings and so far, so good, but my .475 with the same set up will be a more extreme test due to the increase in recoil. I will keep you posted!

I have used the Ruger rings on my Super Redhawk 454 Casull for many years. I have shot a lot of heavy loaded rounds and never had a problem with the Ruger rings. I used a Bushnell 2X6X32 scope on it before I went to the Ultra-dot.
If mounted correctly the Ruger ring will work well.

? ? ? IIRC, I measured the spacing between the ruger rings and compared it w/the body of my UD MatchDot and the 'square' body of the UD is longer that what ruger ring spacing would allow. So, rather than invest in the 30MM rings I went w/the Weigand weaver base and a huskier set of rings than what came w/the UD.
Wonder how your BIL managed to mount his w/Ruger rings? Different UD?

Whitworthodoh, the Ultradot 30 is round bodied like a scope. In fact, here is a photo of mine, which is also an Ultradot 30, but with the redfield rings.

bfrshooterRuger ring spacing is a bugger. Some red dots will not fit. These Redfield rings were milled a little on the insides to make more room. The Ultra Dot fits OK but the Tasco and if I remember, the Bushnell didn't. The Millet fit but my guns eat them.
The Weigand base is the best way to go. Ring selection and spacing takes care of anything.

The problem with the Redfields is the locating lug is a piece plugged in with a tiny pin. The pins sheared. There is also a screw on each side for windage and they can't hold like the Ruger rings.
Ah-h-h, I see ~ a round body. Mine has the square silver body. Didn't know what I was doing when provisioning mine. Happy w/it tho. I didn't like the ruger ring height available as one med and one high when theres no expanded 'bell' needing to clear the frame. Uncertain if the approach was any better as the weigand ruger/weaver base adds some elevation, removal of the rear sight and still the need of securing 'low' weaver style rings. When I can get a roundtuit, I'll look at the warne rings.
Apparently, even the Weigands experienced issues w/the heavy kickers and they came out w/one for the 454/480 SRHs that had a lug that hooked down behind the rear sight mortise/cut. Seems to hold well tho ~

I have 2 Ultra dot Match Dot's. The Match dot uses 30 mm rings (round rings). It is the Area where the switch and adjustments that are squared, but the problem is how long that area is that is squared. It will not fit the Ruger ring spacing. If you want to mount the Match dot, get a Weigand base.

bfrshooterStrange I got two posts, one unfinished. I waited 1/2 hour for the first when it said my request was being processed so I saved my info and closed the response and posted again.
I have found this site locks up a lot.
28 April 2008, 19:21
WhitworthUpdate: I just ordered the new rings from Ruger. Let the waiting begin.......

WhitworthOkay, here is a photo of the underside of a Ruger base (excuse the quality of the photo) and the pen tip is pointing to the stud that prevents the bases from moving front to rear. The Ruger bases have the stud cast in, so it is integral to the ring. The Redfields have pressed in studs that just sheared off......

K20350If you go weaver style you have to spend the money on steel everything as my Uncle found out on his .460 S&W Encore.

WhitworthUpdate: The new rings arrived from Ruger via UPS, and I will be remounting the Ultradot soon........

WhitworthRemounted the Ultradot with my new Ruger rings this morning and we performed a rough sight-in, but will refine it over the next few weeks (need to load more ammo!

). As it stands, it is good enough for gov'ment work and I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it.......
