The fluting wasn't my idea but despite the "Buck Rodgers" look, has grown on me completely. It has taken considerable weight out of the gun (the idea was to make it as small and light as possible to carry as back-up but with the option of using it as a primary hunting tool), and I can honestly say that the recoil with my 525 grain loads is brutal -- and I love it!

It's an SRH that started life as a .454 Casull (the one in my signature picture), but has been offered as a sacrifice to the big-bore gods. Jack Huntington built it and it features a 5-shot cylinder and a 5-inch fluted barrel. The butter-smoothSA trigger breaks at a crisp 2-lbs 6-oz, and Hogue Tamers do their level best at taming. I haven't put it on a scale yet, but it seems to be noticably lighter than my 6-inch Model 29........ shocker

My .475 SRH offers no maiden's caress in the recoil department, but this one exceeds it quite handily -- and DA revolvers come straight back. So, it lets you know every time you touch it off.

I am playing with front sight post heights now to dial it in.

I intend to blood it soon......will keep you posted.

Whitworth, Jack does excellent work and is one of the few Pistol Smiths in the Country that makes his own double action cylinders

thumb Very nice indeed

From what I gather, taking that barrel off is VERY difficult...
29 December 2009, 05:19
Whitworth
It usually is. This one was a lot tougher than the first one he did for me. Ruger used a special glue on the .480 and .454 SRHs that they didn't on the .44s.

Have fun with that thing Marko. I'd have some extra padding sewn in your gloves between your thunb and first finger. Maybe a piece of gel pack if you can find some small enough or some wet suit neoprene. Those grips do help alot though. I shot one a few years ago that did'nt have those grips and it was much more painful than yours with the same load.
Enjoy and were glad your happy with it!
Happy New Year if I don't get a chance to talk with you.

Very nice looking gun, Whitworth, I'd like to Jack make me something [475] someday.
don't mean to sound like a dummy, but do you have to get 2 different height scope mounts for that? The angle the gun is on is hard to tell.

He works with a bunch of macho chicks -- we're talking really tough ladies -- the kind that like heavy recoiling revolvers, drink beer by the case, and chew tobacco. Oh, and TBEAR's actually a girl. Big Grin

Well, I managed to weigh (on a digital scale in our mailroom) the .500 alongside my 6-inch M29 -- the S&W came in at 2.96-lbs, and the SRH came in at 2.94-lbs -- explains the recoil!

That is a nice piece, and that is a lot of bullet your shooting. Jack built me one also, several years ago. Only difference was I had him put the interchangeable FA front sight base, and mine didn't have them flutes. But them flutes sure makes it look so good! I had a set of rings for a 2x B&L, a set of rings for a ultra red dot, and made one to fit the little Optima 2000 optic. Sure wish I kept that SRHK. I can just feel that recoil!!!!!
