So I started shooting at 100 yards...
So I started shooting at 100 yards...
And I'm actually quite happy with the initial results.
S&W 629 PC Light Hunter in .44 Magnum. Burris 2x scope.
The Load: 240 gr. Laser Cast, 20.0 gr. 2400, Fed Large Match Pistol Primer. Velocity: 1,350 fps (clocked over 11 loads). (this is my practice load)
The other fun thing is that the revolver grouped same exact POI with my Practice load as my heavy load. 310gr. SureShot WNGC, 17.5 gr. 2400, Fed LP Match Primer for 1,250 fps. Even more surprising was that the recoil on both loads felt pretty much identical.
I am really, really tickled with the results. A better scope is on the way!
Regards,
Robert

MS Hitman.44s are good about grouping light and heavy loads together. Good to hear it's going well for you.

guncurtis2That's pretty awesome. I just picked up a SBH with a 2x Leuapold. I'll be plenty happy if I can get groups like that.

Mke / Txrnovi,
nice shooting there. You might want to be careful at the range shooting next to rifles, some folks get a bit steamy under the collar when they are outshot by a fellow with a handgun.

I have even had folks simply pack up and leave, mumbling to themselves about groups I shot similar to yours.

larrysWith groups like that I'm not sure I'd mess with the scope. Great shooting!

Very nice shooting. Looks like you'll do great come Deer season

With a duplex type reticle you can use the top of the thick lower verticle as a reference for holding higher for longer shots. Put some targets out farther and see at what distance the gun shoots to that point.
You might also try some loooooong shots to see if your bullets are still stable way out there.
I tried some 320-350gn bullets in a 454. They were all basically the same except for a different nose profile and meplat size.
I had some LFN type bullets with meplat size of 70%, 80% and 90%. The 70% bullets shot some very nice groups close up and appeared to stay stable way out to 800yds(ish). I didn't hang any targets for the long range, just held higher and shot for the gongs at 100yd increments. The 80% noses shot good to just past 200yds and then started to drift off in all directions. I expected the 90% bullets to be even worse, but they performed about the same as the 70% bullets.
I guess this all boils down to, we can discuss theory all day long, but still need to spend more time at the range to see what actually happens.
