The Bride of Bullwinkle
I took this cow moose in Maine on Monday with my .500 Linebaugh. First shot was somewhere in the 100 yard range. Going to have a whole lot of steaks in the freezer!

Sounds like a few hundred pounds of good eats to me! Did you hunt through an outfitter?
21 August 2011, 18:50
Whitworth
Yeah, I did, Brandon. There were a number of crop deprivation cow permits given out this year as the broccoli farmers are taking a beating. The outfitter was # 9 Lake Outfitters of Bridgewater, Maine. I got lucky and tagged out on day one. I couldn't be happier with the outfitter and their services.

Any moose is a good moose, congratulations on a good hunt and a great game animal taken. Tell us more about how your gun did.

She weighed 629 dressed -- big girl!

I was using Grizzly's 500 grain LFN load (rated at 1,100 fps). Shot her in the last couple of minutes of legal shooting time/light and she was merely a silouette, so I estimated where her shoulder was and squeezed. I hit her a little farther back than I had wanted to but it double lunged her in any event. She moved off a bit and I just continued shooting at what was now just a dark blob at least 125 - 150 yards away. I connected on a couple of the shots. I tend to shoot until they are down -- cuts on tracking and loosing game! She went down, and that was that. She was done but I still put one behind her ear. All shots were through and through.

Thanks a bunch, guys!

Great job Whit! Moose are great eating & one of the most unique animals out there for the handgun hunter. They react totally different from a hit than an elk or deer. Many times the moose will take a solid, fatal hit & just stand there, then they decide their dead & topple over.
Out west its best to shoot them later in the season (moose season is 3 months) it takes ours a while to bulk up & really have any fat on them. We've taken one early in the season (Aug 31) & it was thin & tough even though it was a young bull.
Fine shooting with the 500!

MARKO!!!!! EXCELLENT JOB BUDDY!

That is an awesome accomplishment. I was excited to see a photo! Moose with a pistol! I remember going to the range with my Ruger SRH 454 Casull and it was tough without some good form/practice. Short barrelled .500 Linebaugh is awesome.

So what'd that SRH start out life as and who did the converting to the 500JRH?

Kinda making me want to put an ultradot on my 460.....
22 August 2011, 01:13
Whitworth
Landrum, it has a 5-inch barrel.

Brandon, it started life as a .454 before it became a .500 Linebaugh.

Thanks again, gentlemen!

Whitworth,

Thats a great moose, gonna give you some great meals all year.

Was wondering who did the conversion for your ruger to 500 linbaugh.

Matt

Simply, Elegant but always approachable

Matt, Jack Huntington (530-268-6877) performed the conversion on my .454 SRH, and I am exceedingly happy with it!

You and Thompson were the inspiration for my mounting the Ultra Dot on my Blackhawk....I was going to apply for Shiras moose in Idaho until I saw the non resident tag fee. Damn, I didn't want to buy part of the state, just one critter. $2101.00!!!! thumbdown

I am so glad I opted for the shorter barrel -- so much easier to pack and evidently still very accurate.

Thanks, guys!

swamp donkey, now that just tickles me to no end. Good shooting and a good looking swamp mule Whitworth. Let's see, how much muzzle energy does that load generate; oh yeah, I guess moose don't read OGW charts.

Oh, this load is a monster! It generates (or rather calculates out to) somewhere around 1,400 ft-lbs of muzzle energy!! Surely not enough for a swamp donkey! LOL!

Thanks, Hitman!
