Bear loads?
I'm new to handgun hunting and this forum but so far both seem to be all right. I hunt with one of two contender barrels,ssk309jdj and a ssk375jdj. Last year I was fortunate enought to get a nice blacktail deer with a 260gr nosler partion out of the 375. Could anyone give me so advice on the 309 bullets for blackbear.

Any good 165 to 180 gr will work just fine.

TonyK,

The best heavy bullet with a great velocity in your .375 JDJ could be a 270 gr bullet

The best heavy bullet with a great velocity in your .309 JDJ could be a 165 gr bullet

I would use a 150gr Nolser BT or 150gr Remington BR Piont for your 309 JDJ. This bullet work good on Black Bear out of my 308 Competitor Pistol. For your 375 JDJ I would go with the new Nolser 260GR BT bullet

Tony,
Later this month here in Alaska I'm going to be hunting black bear with my 309 JDJ. I have worked up a load using the 165gr Nosler Partition. Buddy I'm going with is going to be using be carrying his 375 JDJ. His standard load uses the 270gr Hornady.

JD,
Thanks for the info. I'll look forward to hear about your hunt. I was lucky enought to have a nice 3x3 blacktail hold still for me long enought to put a 260gr partion out of the 375 into his chest. First shot off hand at 70yards, put it on his chin, straight on,he didn't flinch. Then I pulled my head out and put it on his chest pulled the trigger and thats all it took to be hooked.
