My bucket list has either a cull or tuskless elephant on it for 2014. My goal is to use a double action revolver. At first I was thinking about getting a custom gun built but now am leaning towards a factory gun. I currently own an SSK Beast in 44m. Other options are a SRK in 480 or a S&W 500. I like the look of the John Ross gun.
Does anyone have first hand experience using a punch bullet on an elephant in either 44m, 480 Ruger or a 500s&w?
I know my 44 can shoot through water buffaloes w the BB 340g +P+ load. But I don't know how lead or punch bullets would do on an elephant's head.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

jwp475I wouldn't want to use a hard cast on a frontal brain shot. The Punch bullet would certainly be my choice

MS Hitman+1 on the Punch bullets. Should work fine in the .44 Mag. At least it did for Larry Kelly several times.

LionHunterThere is a major difference in the penetration required on an Ele frontal brain shot v. a side brain shot. I would strongly recommend the side brain for a handgun on Ele. A much easier shot to place and less penetration required.
While I've killed a few Ele, I've not yet done it with a handgun, only because I've been experimenting with CEB bullets and B&M rifles. Have done Cape Buff w/handgun.
I know Ele have been killed with the .44mag but it would NOT be my choice for Ele. I would use my S&W 500. Ele are different than any other animal on Earth.

WV HitmanWas going to do an elephant with .475 Linebaugh and Punch bullets, but SAA lost my luggage. Had to do it with my .416 Taylor Encore and FMJs. No problem with a frontal shot with it at 12 yards except for underwear change.
Tried to do a tuskless or PAC next year in SA, but prices have gone crazy.PM me if you found a good deal.
