Much to my shock and surprise, my bride told me to purchase that SRH in .454 that I had been looking at for so long. I have long admired this revolver, since a former co worker let me shoot his every once in a while.

This gun was used (widow selling her deceased husbands collection), and came with a nice red dot scope. Not sure if I like the scope yet, but do enjoy the gun!

My question is this. At what range should I sight it in at? The iron sights appear to be set at 50 yards, do I sight the scope in at 75 or 100? I am planing on using either a 240 gr XTP Mag or 300 gr XTP Mag bullet for deer this year.

It depends on how you shoot and your load. That said, the lighter bullets can be driven pretty fast, and thus 100 yds is a reasonable zero distance.

Paul's right, if you are scoping it, no reason not to sight out to 100 yards.......

Get the 300gr XTPS! My 7.5" 454 SRH loves them.

Good advice Bugle, Mine also loves the 300gr slugs, but I've found that the 255 lead bullets shoot well also at about 1200fps, good for target practice.

Don't get me started on using heavy cast bullets in the Casull!

I'm with the rest, don't go below 300gr. Mine also does very well with the XLT's but does extremely better with LBT hardcast 335gr. @ 1300fps.

I have a box of 240 gr and a box of 300 gr bullets coming. Will try to work on a load for each this weekend (just something neat about working up a load for a new gun!).

Hornady doesn't list anything over 300gr, and neither does Nosler. Were do you get the data for the heavier loads?

I haven't reloaded in years, as my living situation doesn't allow for it (that will change soon, hopefully!), so I have to rely on factory ammo. I shoot nothing but quality hardcast loads. I don't use jacketed bullets at all in my SRHs (just a personal preference for hardcast bullets, so don't crucify me! ). Buffalo Bore loads quality heavy cast loads up to 360 grains, Grizzly Cartridges loads heavy also, and my current favorite load is by Double Tap and it's a 400 grain WFN at 1400 fps. A lot of guys here cast their own bullets, so they will be of more help with specific loads, but I have found that my SRH loves heavy bullets. JMHO!

Another vote for 300 gr XTP's or Speer UC with 296. I can't believe the accuracy I get with these in my SRH.

I have already ordered 370, and 395grs CP-bullets.
And a box of 300grs XTP's.

I have to clean my SRH though. I blew a hole in my sandbag......

I ordered 2 boxes of the Double Tap 400 grainers and so hopefully next week I will have some pics and maybe video of the difference between the 300xtp and the 400 hard cast

I'm glad to see so many have had good resuls and are happy with the 300gr XTP mags. I spent alot of time load testing and trying every bullet known to man kind before settling on the xp in my F.A..454.
I shoot a 375gr. hard cast in my redhawk but the beauty of the redhawk is that they will handle most all bullets just fine.

I stocked up on them a while back for my plinking and rabbit load. If I decide I like the 400's better, I will plink the XTPs away and get 10 boxes of the 400's

The 400s are nasty -- as you will see! When did you order them?

So far, it seems to like the 300 gr XTP/MAGs very well, but I can get decent groups with a light load of 2400 for the 240 gr XTP's.

So far, this has been a great gun to shoot! And a challanging one to reload.

Jack, have you tried any heavy cast bullets? My SRH loves 'um.

Unfortunatly, the law in Iowa is that you need an expanding bullet for deer. So I can't use hard cast quite yet.

If that is the case, I would stick with the 300gr XTP

I actualy asked a game warden about it. He said it was because of people using FMJ Ball ammo and not recovering the deer. While hard cast are not FMJ's, they aren't expanding bullets either. So it looks like the Hornday XTP's will be for me.

I am going to Nebraska for an antler less deer permit (probably use my .308, but will have the .454 along) this weekend. The Iowa late firearm season is the second week of December, and that is what the .454 is for!

glad to find this post as i have a SRH 454 on order and wanted to use the hornady factory 300 xtp next fall for deer and black bear, will these xtp's hold up on moose or would you guys reccommend something else?

Tanoose, for maximum penetration on a big animal such as moose, I personallz would go with a heavz hardcast bullet over and expanding bullet - JMHO.

Tanoose - Try the 300gr XTP's at 50yards and the 400gr Double Taps at 25 yards.

I've found both hit near the same area at 25 yards, but the 300 is a lil flatter out to 50. I'm able to shoot sihlouettes at 50 with my 454 and 300gr xtp and 25 yards holding dead on with the 400grainers.

This way you could carry both incase you run into a Moose

If those are the 300gr Mag XTPs they'd work on Moose! Just don't try to break a shoulder with them!! A shot in the heart /lung area will get it done. I'd also get within 50 yds!

i shoot a raging bull in 454 i use the 260 nosler partition and the 300gr nosler partition loads, the 260 is a flatter shooter and good out to 150 yards ask that 10 pt buck that dropped like a sack of hot potatoes when hit , love that gun

I still say heavy heardcasts are the way to go. Then you won't have to worry about any pesky bones getting in the way of penetration. JMHO.
