RMiller280 hardcast vs 255 hardcast in a 45 Colt?
Would the 280 penetrate much more than a 255 in the 45 colt going 1100 to 1200 fps for either one?

MS HitmanProbably not by leaps and bounds. By comparison, I have found a 350 grain bullet penetrates about the same as a 400 grain bullet in a .475 Linebaugh.

WhitworthBetween those weights it would be more nose profile dependent than the weight, assuming same bullet material/hardness.

tradmarknose profile is more important than weight imho. this is covered in depth and then more in max prasac's latest book, handgun hunting revolvers. you would really really enjoy this book it will answer alot of questions you have and get ya going on the right foot.

AtkinsonIf both were the Keith simi wadcutter solid nose bullets, the difference would be very little if any..I would prefer the higher velocity of the 255 gr. bullet, and it will give you all the penetration in the world.

RMillerI saw some 280 SWC on gunbroker that look nice but I can get 255 SWC locally for a bit cheaper.

WhitworthThere are better hunting bullets available than semi wadcutters. You'll be better served by LBT bullets.

True, but for deer, a SWC will work just fine.

wheleniteI believe this is the 300 RF, as cast by Matt's Bullets, they weigh right at 315 grains with the gas-check. Very accurate and hard hitting at 1150-1200 fps.

Ruger Blackhawk Bisley.I have pushed them close to 1,400 FPS with no signs of pressure.

Yes, a Bisley Blackhawk will handle them easily, and I also have a 5" 454 BFR that is even more accurate.

I shoot a 315 at 1100 to 1300 depending on barrel length in my 44s.
One does not do fast double taps with them.

Bill/OregonP dog, I took 325-grain hard-cast .44 Magnum handloads over a maximum load of H-110 in a 5 1/2-inch Ruger Redhawk on an Alaska fishing trip 20 odd years ago. I did not enjoy working up the load one bit -- and now I am two decades older, wiser, and "frailer" ...

NormanConquestKinda a moot point between the 2 weights in 45 L.C. I use my Lyman # 2 cast (9 lbs W/W per 1 lb. 50/50) for my 45 but I use straight linotype for my 44 mag.
Never mistake motion for action.

wheleniteBill/Oregon, I've fired 4" groups at 75 yards, but not any further than that. They were still mighty stable at that range, so 100 shouldn't be difficult, but beyond I haven't tried.
