pharmpokePronghorn with 401 Herters Powermag- Done
I closed the deal on a pronghorn with the open sighted 401 Powermag today using RCBS 180gr air-cooled WW and 1960's vintage original brass. A young buck at 116 yards- complete pass through both shoulders. Very satisfying day. I've yet to hear of anyone harvesting a pronghorn with one of these revolvers and would be interested to know of any others that have done it. I suspect it isn't done often. I've shot many antelope with a rifle, but it's a whole other story closing the distance on one to 100yards or less on the flat plains of Wyoming. I missed a nice big herd buck at 136 yards earlier in the day after a 1&1/2 hour, quarter mile stalk.

pharmpokeSorry, but I don't own a camera and wouldn't know how to post a photo if I did. You'll have to imagine sage brush flats in central Wyoming (the Wind River range in the background) with a 2 year old pronghorn buck on the ground, a smiling, over weight 49year old man crouched next to it, and a big blued single action revolver with a huge front blade sight laying on the critter.

Have never done the deed with a .401 PM but have taken numerous does and more than a few bucks with a revolver. The best place for this I've found is where there are alot of folds in the terrain or arroyos. I forget the area designation but it's just up by the continental divide outside Farson. Ambushing along a fence line is another way. I learned these few tricks and more after pulling and shaving plenty of cactus spines from my hide. Revolvers with iron sights, I like to get within at least 75 yards. scoped is about 100-150yards depending on the caliber. Encores, Contenders, etc. can be used out a ways depending on the shooter's skill and self imposed range limits.
Congratulations on a well earned trophy. I've been shooting the .41Magnum since they appeared.I gather ballistics for the PM aren't that far from the .41Magnum.
Ma never had a decent picture of me after I started crawling so you know what I think of cameras.

TCLouisDo a web search, I think both John Taffin and Glen Fryxell both did articles on this gun/cartridge.

kenoneillCongratulations. The .401 Powermag is an oldie, of course, and handgun hunting wasn't nearly as popular in the '60's. I suspect that very few pronghorn have been taken with the Herter's .401's.
Now go buy a camera.
