Mountain Lion Handgun Hunt
I may have the oppertunity to do a Mountain lion hunt in a week or so.

I am planning on using my Freedom Arms 475 Linebaugh.

Not that I think I need a 475 for a mountain lion, a 44 Mag would work fine, but I bought the FA to be my "hunting handgun".

I have taken pig, deer, wild turkey, and a black bear with it so far, si I will use it.

I have several different factory loads from Buffalo Bore and the 400gr Hornady XTP.

I plan to use the Hornady 400gr loads as they shoot good, and have all the power and penetration necessary for the cat.

Shot the gun yesterday and the sights are spot on.

That's excellent! When are you going? Can't wait to read the report, and see the pictures -- take lots of pictures, please!

Don't have a .475, but have shot enough XTPs in my Casull to now that they're purrrfect for thin skinned game...definately enough to take care of all nine lives at once thumb(Sorry, couldn't resist hillbilly)

Best of luck on your hunt, and like Whitworth said, take lots of pictures.

Have a great time....you staying in Texas or going over to NM? I saw where they killed a HUGE cat two years ago in Therber or Throckmorton not very far from where I used to hunt...

You hunting with dogs or calling?

And which "back-up" guns are you going to be carrying...the .44 4" or the Commander?..or both.. jumping

Thanks for the support guys, I will take lots of pictures.

Bob, I am going to Idaho.
I will take the 4"44 and the 45ACP Commander with me.

Probably carry the Commander as backup to the 475 as it is so light and flat.

I will carry the 475 in a cross draw holster.

Yes, it will be on snowshoes with dogs.

If we can find lion tracks where the snow is not too deep.

Hello Tony,
You gonna stop by to see me on your way to Idaho? I was lion hunting last week on Tuesday west of town. Looked like a 160-180 pounder by the tracks. Hunted HARD all day Tuesday, came out at 7pm. Finally got the last 2 dogs recovered Friday morning. No lion in a tree, yet.
Got a new airedale pup last fall for coyotes this next fall. She's a toothy little witch, has fanged me lots. Now at 6 months old is losing the last of her baby teeth.
I'm in the process of trying to transfer to Cheyenne, wife got a Federal job and is already there.
I have a 5.5" .500 Linebaugh on order with John L. up at Cody. Maybe it'll be done when you come thru. Your brother going, too? Cindy'll make him some meatloaf...
Shoot a gorilla for me....

Last I heard from him the other day he was headed out hog hunting with his nephew...

I did make it out of the snow.
just in time to take my 10 year old nephew on a hog hunt at the deer lease, he shot a nice one, and get him home, and back to school, then get myself to the BlaserPro.com Fest hunt, where I shot a pig.

I did not get a cat in Idaho, did not find a fresh track.

Found a lot of fresh wolf tracks. Mad

Did catch a wild Steel Head [put it back], and rode Snow machines a lot, and did a fair amount of walking.

Had a great time.

NE 450, where in Idaho were you hunting mountain lions?

Sorry you didn't get one. Were you using dogs??

Not surprised about the wolves. They are everywhere now.

Good luck next time.

I was near Elk City.

Yes we had dogs. I hunted with 2 different guys, with 2 different set of dogs, and one day we all hunted together. One of the guys had taken a cat, and his wife had taken a cat earlier in the month.

The snow had melted off down low and the deer/elk were down there and we just did not find any tracks.
