My dad said that my great-grandpa used to smoke coons out of hollow trees, but he wasn't sure how he went about it. Anybody know anything about this?

jwp475Build a small low intensity firs in the hollow of the tree with the fire on the ground and keep the fire nearly smoothered so it smokes a lot. That'll get them out .

I used to get them out of big cottonwoods, but the holes in the trunk, above ground, went down and not up, it would have been hard to try smoke, I would climb up, put my ear to the hole, listen for noise, haul a chain saw up, cut a hole big enough to stick my arm in with a .22 pistol, empty a magazine or two, shimmy down to the approximate bottom of the hole, cut another hole with the saw so I could pull them out. Worked every time. I was making big money, $6 each unskinned! THat was in the Republican River valley!

Lloyd Smalenope but knew some boys down south that had a rig for holding them. It was cross shaped. Alot of them held bottles of something too looked like peroxide but i dont think thats what it was. They said it made a good antiseptic though.
