I reacently turned 21 and decided I should purchase firearms insted of drinking my money away. I have been into rifle shooting and reloading for a while and this was a welcome breath of fresh air when it comes to serious benchrest shooting.

I decided to go down and see what I liked best. I started out wanting a Smith & Wesson 460, however I soon realised I would be facing 1400 out the door with brass,bullets,dies,powder and it would be more expensive than if I were to buy 3 guns. I decided to do just that and purchase 3 guns. I picked up 2 Ruger 22/45 MKIII's and a Ruger 6.5" New Model Blackhawk in 357. I have fallen in love with this wheelgun. It really shoots nicely, and I can't figure out why some make the 357 to be hard kicker, because frankly it's not at all, at least in the blackhawk platform.

I have been shooting a lot of Hornady XTP's behind H110, 2400, and W231. I have put exactly 620 rounds down the barrel in two weeks and I don't think i'm going to stray from this pace. I like this BlackHawk so much i'm looking at possibly getting a Super BlackHawk in 44. We will see if the budget allows. Anyway here is a pic:

The way the Blackhawk sits in your hand makes a lot of difference.A Bisley is nice too.
I don't think the .357 kicks a all, and I have one in a snubby thats has a tremendous muzzle flash,but no recoil.
Get a Super Blackhawk in .44 Mag. You won't be sorry.
I have a shooting buddy that has a converted Super in .480 Ruger and it is real sweet.Lotta horsepower.

Very nice pistol for a first choice.

My first revolver my father gave to me was a RG 22 single action. When I was almost 21 I talked him into signing for a Haws Western Marshal in 357 it was also a fine shooter until the front sight fell off. The Rugers are hard to beat and unless you load them to hot they will last a lifetime.

A friend of mine bought a Ruger Super Black Hawk in 44 Mag. He was doing fine with his reloading and was happy with his firearm. Then he purchased some reloads from an acquaintance after about 20 rounds the gun went bang real loud his hand was bleeding and numb the cylinder had exploded blowing the top strap off. He was lucky only to loose his pistol in his unfortunate experience.

I have 5 rugers and luv them all.

When it comes to single action revolvers Ruger is hard to beat, dollar for dollar. If you go to .44 mag or .45 Colt, you might consider the Bisley grip frame.

Definately go with the bisley in .44 mag. Better yet go with the red hawk

A good and mature choice!!

My first hunting gun was a 4" Mod 28...a fine gun, but I went to a Super Blackhawk fairly quickly and have used .44 mag for the last 35 years or so and it has never let me down and I believe it is all you really need. I'm not sure how you can come up with a better all around caliber and even loaded down it is an awesome performer on big game when you place the shot properly.

Good luck with your Rugers...try a Dan Wesson some day!!

For a serious hunting handgun the Redhawk is the way to go. You can't beat the Super Blackhawk for a all around 44 mag.
I second the sentiments about the Bisley frame.

If you're looking for a 44 Mag and like Rugers, the Super Blackhawk Hunter would be a fine choice. Double actions have no advantage over singles at this level of recoil (stout, but certainly managable).

very nice but be carefull revolvers can be addictive and you are on the money the 357 mag is a blast to shoot

IMHO double actions are more accurate than SBH. In my experience, the SBH is the least accurate .44 Mag, followed by the S&W 629 then the S&W 29, the Redhawk and the best is the 8" vented heavy barrel Dan Wesson. I've owned them all and have shot them a lot and that is the way they shook out for me...your experience may differ, but probably not by much. With the 4" barrel Dan wesson shoots 3" at 50 yds with iron sights. I had a SBH cut to 5" that would do almost as good, I think due to a better crown, but it still had one chamber that threw flyers a lot. Don't get me wrong..I love the SBH...it is just not as accurate as others IMO.

you sure did get lucky with those grips there about as nice as ive seen on a factory Ruger.

Waffen, Congratulations on your choice! 35 years ago, when I turned 21 and got my NYS pistol permit, the Blackhawk in 6.5"/.357 was my first revolver also. I sold it many years ago, but it is one of the guns that I miss the most. Don't let it go, ever! Good hunting.

Waffen, you have made a great choice. When I was 19 (different era) I went to the outdoor store downtown and bought a .357 mag Blackhawk very similar to yours, but with the extra cylinder in 9mm Luger. I wasn't a very good pistol shot with it at first, but with a lot of practice I got better. I also picked up other single action Rugers along the way, I think that they are my favorite revolver. Like they say, don't let that pistol get away from you!! I let my .357 go and wish I still had it to go along with my .41 BH and .44 SBH that own today.

Nice pistol,you'll like the 44 mag when you get one.I have a super blackhawk.But now I wish I had bought a hunter model with a scope.
