Ruger HUNTER Super Blackhawk or the Ruger .480 for hunting??
Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum and I have a question for you all. I am wanting to purchasing a new hunting pistol. I am wanting either the Ruger Super Blackhawk HUNTER in the 44mag. or the Ruger .480 for hunting. Which one have you guys had most luck with and has proven itself to you. I have a Savage Striker in the .308 and I love it to death. I have shot many a deer and hogs with it and would not give it up for nothing. I just want a little variety in the handgun hunting area. Let me know what you think. Happy New Year!!! Thanks, BRAD

You can look at two different ways... Two different revolvers, or the same one in two diferent cartridges. Depends on which one you want.
If you like the Super Redhawk, then decide which round you want more(44 or 480), since both will do just fine, hunting-wise, with the right bullets/loads.
OTOH, you can decide if you want a Single action(Hunter) or if you want a double action(SRH).
If you decide to skip which revolvers they come from, and look at the rounds, then you'll need to gain more info between the two.
The 44 has a stellar reputation, revolver-wise, and the 480 is a new round, gaining more popularity every time. There are plenty of factory loads available for the 44 mag, including a lot of handload bullets. Not too sure about the 480.
I can only speak for the 44 mag, having owned one in a BH. Although I didn't hunt anything with it, it still can do a fine job. I currently own a BH in 45LC, and can duplicate everything a 44 mag does. Never owned a 480, but would like to. Good luck.

Brad. First welcome to the forum. I have a Super blackhawk and Super redhawk in 44mag and I love them they shot great. The 480 Ruger is nice. But it is the same as a 475 Wildey but with a rim case. I had a Wildey and sold it did not need it. With the 480 Ruger you can go up to 48000 psi if you need this power you can push a 265gr 1600 to 1700fps and a 400gr around 1100 to 1200. In my 44mag I can push a 240gr XTP at 1640fps and a 300gr hard lead at 1492fps. I would go with the Super Blackhawk HUNTER

Brad,

If you can stretch a lunch hour, come on out to Rabbit Creek and shoot my 480

I'm very fond of the 480, it'll do every the 480 can do, as well as many things it can't do.

I also really like the SRH, very accurate, and I can shoot it accurately. To be fair, I haven't had a chance to see how well I could shoot a SBH hunter. That said, I regularly put 5 shots into a 1" group at 50 yds with the 480 SRH, and have put 3 into 1 1/2" at 100 yds.
