I wanted a 4 5/8" SBH for years, don't know why but it just seemed like a decent size/power ratio gun. And few years ago a new one came in to my possession in a trade. Over the course of time I've made a few changes to the little gun.

Last Fall I changed from rubber Hogue grips to wooden Hogues and it really makes the gun seem friendlier.

Last week while shooting for groups the base pin popped out about an inch for the first time ever. This happened three times during that session. Then yesterday it happened twice. This is the third Ruger SA I've owned and the one I've fired the most. I've read about the Belt Mountain base pin and about the increased power latch spring. In fact I've got a latch spring enroute from Brownell's.

I disassembled the latch pin today to see how hard it was to get apart and found this:



I take it the latch isn't supposed to get beat up this badly? Am I doing something wrong or is this normal?

Great question, I don't have the answer . Have had several SBHs and large frame Bisley' s but only had one that occasionally let the pin slip forward. Will be interesting to see the answer.

The answer I got from the gents on the Ruger Forum was that the latch and pin weren't fitted together correctly. Their guess is that the groove in the pin is too shallow.

I have a new latch and increased power spring on order from Brownell's. I'll probably call Ruger tomorrow and see about a replacement center pin as their price is usually pretty good (free). I've shot this gun for at least five years so at $4 to replace the latch it's not a big deal to keep some replacements handy.

I haven't shot any of my SBHs that much. But one was well used when I got it. It kinda amazes me that even up here .I would say at least half the guys that have 44 mags, pretty much only shoot the lighter half of the bullet weight spectrum in them.
