9,3x72 R only measures .430" or so at the base which is quite undersize for a .405 case. 9,3x74 R has the same base diameter as the 7x65R, which is the standard .470" or so of the 8x57 and 30-06 family (base, not rim, of course). .405 WCF is nominally about .460" at the base.

It's the 9.3x74 I forget easy to mix up .I have some 3040 Krag but I didbt want to mess up the chamber on a teddy Roosevelt model .I will pm yall so I don't clog up this place .I hope someway starline gets caught up and can make 405 win its a Natural for them.I love shooting the 405 its a smooth shooter .I cheated and put a limbsaver pad on it .Yep its 9.3 x74 and 7x65 r tgF work and 3040 krag for the short stuff.Hornady stinks for quit making brass and no telling when they make ammo .I wish Winchester would make some again
I have a few 38-72 WCF cases that I could send you to experiment with - just like the 40-72 but necked to 38. It would let you know if the 40-72 would work. The principal difference between the xx-72s and the .405 is the thickness of the rim - .405 WCF nominal at .073" while the xx-72s are nominal .063" just like the Krag case. The Mauser rimmed cases have nominal 1,5mm (0.058") thick rims.
