45 ACP with Red Dot or PROMO
Hi All; My first post in this forum.....

I intend to begin reloading 45 ACP this summer and I'm doing a bit of research.

We are currently loading 12 ga shot shells using Alliant's PROMO powder (details on attached link)

http://www.alliantpowder.com/products/promo.php

I have written Alliant for further information about using PROMO for 45 ACP so we'll see what they say.

The reason I use this powder is Red Dot has always been a good performer and PROMO dilevers similar performance at 1/2 the price. When I look at Alliant's comments I believe this could be used for the 45 ACP:

quote:
Promo has the same burn speed as Red Dot, but is more dense, thus requiring a smaller bushing to obtain the same charge weight.

quote:
Principal Purpose Light and standard 12 & 16 ga. target loads

Secondary Uses Handgun loads

I purchased an 8 lb. canister of PROMO; enough for 1000's of 12 ga. loads with room to crank out a few 45's on the side (if its safe!).

I have loaded and shot 1000's of .45 ACP, .45 Colt, and .38 spl. with Red Dot if that helps. It makes for good target loads.

I have alos used RedDot for handgun loads & see no reason you can't work up a load w/ Promo. If it's the same burn rate as RD, use the starting data for RD & work up. If you have a chrono it will help to see when you've reached a sim. vel as the RD loads.

As I recall promo came out when alliant began to "clean up" their powder line, it is nothing more than the powder granuales that were sorted off as either to big or to small. It is in fact red dot powder. If I remember correctly the article was in handloader, the burn rate of promo was supposed to be very close to red dot but ever so slightly fster burning as it was composed mostly of the smaller granuales

It does!... but works very well in 12 ga target loads.

Here's what Alliant Said:

With Promo, you can use the same data as for Red Dot, even in handgun
loads. Thanks for your interest in contacting us and have a nice day.
