Need help with 45/70 load for Buffalo Classic
Tried 5 different powders/loads using a laser cast 405 gr GC bullet. Nothing good came from it. Anyone have recipes that work well in their Buffalo classic? I believe this gun doesn't like the 405 gr bullets. Thanks

My experience with 405 gr hard cast and a 45/70 Handi Rifle is that the trajectory is like a rainbow, and then I need to back off on the load to manage the recoil.

There is also a problem with leading. Even with Unque, at 88 kpsi, the bullet is moving too fast for a cast bullet.

The 350 gr Hornady round nose is an alternative.

I've shot the 405gr Cast Performance at just shy of 1900fps, it's gas checked so there's no leading problem.

Speaking of the the 350gr Hornady RN, I shot this group at 2027fps yesterday with my scoped BC, for a comparison of velocity, I also shot a ½gr more in 22" Handi at 1850fps.

You may need to slug the bore of your BC so you'll know what size cast bullets to shoot, both of mine like .459". Use a #8 soft lead egg sinker for the slugging

I have worked several loads for the Buffalo Classic.
Now my loads are not for the timid.
I have the Hornady 350 RN at 2300 fps and the Barnes X 350 at 2350 fps. Both of these loads were with 51.1 gr IMR 4198. No pressure problems in the 2 rifles I have. Accuracy is good and the recoil is moderate. These loads also get 2100 fps in my Marlin 1895's.
You probably want to start a little lower though. I have the bullets sitting about 0.030" off of thte lands.

Ignore your rights and they will go away!

Thanks for the help. I look forward to trying these loads. Your input is appreciated.
