1000 yard load question
I'm looking for a sanity check on an idea and load. 5.56 at 1000 yards, most folks call it marginal but this is the plan this month. As I mentioned earlier today I'm going to shoot the 1000 after our National Match Course. I plan on loading Berger 80 VLD's over Varget. My regular load is a 77 SMK and 24 gr Varget in a CCI 400 primed WCC case. I haven't had problems with the primer but plan on using a Wolf Magnum for the 1000 yard load and trying both 24 and 24.5 gr loads.

As a sanity check, has anyone tried this load combination? I figure if this load doesn't work for 1000 yards I'll use the rest of the Bergers for 600 yard loads.

PS. Early apology if you read this in another thread. Some people only read 1 or 2 threads.

If You have a good stout rifle. 25grs compressed
my be what would work.
keeping the bullet super sonic will be the problem. If the velocity dropes low it will be all over the place.

G'Day Fella's,

Sam, a mate of mines son Robbie S, shoots 1000Yard BR with a .223 Rem, here is what he told me with regard to his load.

"I'm using 25gr of AR 2208 (Varget), 80gr SMK moly coated, Lapua brass and a Fed 205 Match primer.
This is a pretty HOT load but the harder I drove them the better they shot.
Out of a 27" barrel there nearly doing 3000 fps."

By the way, at the last local 1K BR match a few weeks back, Robbie won the Smallest Group for the match with 5 shots into 170mm or 6.630"ish!
Thats pretty bloody good for an 18 year old, with a Rat Gun!!!

Sam, I hope that is of some help

Doh!

Sam,
You are going to have to chronograph the loads. Then I'd check them out on JBM if you can't practice @ 1000. Keep an eye on your SD too.

Thanks guys. I'm looking for 2800 FPS I'm going to step Varget up until I get there. I'm hoping to be around 24.6 to 24.8 grains. My best velocity spread has been a little higher than I'd like to see at 35 fps. I found 80.5 Bergers to load. I might get to shoot a sample this weekend. Between working on my Jeep and having stuff come up to mis the June 25th match things are looking glum. On the other hand, that gives me until August 27th to get ready if I want to be an optimist.
