blackdogsrule.450/400 3" Low Velocity Question
Does anyone have the recipe for this lower velocity practice round? I purchased some and they are excellent but at $12 a pull it takes the fun out of practicing.

dpcdIn my Ruger I use 300 grain Hornady bullets with the starting loads as for 400s; use powders on the faster end from the book; and 400 grain case bullets over some 5744; 40 grains.

bpesteveThe No.1 I have loves 36 grs of 5744 with the Hornady 300 gr intended for the .405 Win like dpcd uses above. I just seat them to the cannelure, use a bit of crimp (5744 likes that) and go for it. Velocity is about 1650 and the durn thing prints cloverleaf groups at 50 yds. Makes it fun to shoot and practice with!

Would also kill a lot of critters.
I found that the best thing to do for NA game is to make a 405 WCF out of it; 300 grainer at about 2200 fps or so; plenty. Although I did shoot a hog with a full power 400 grain; did the job.
If you are using these in a Double Rifle, forget everything I said; those follow different rules; I only use full loads in my Krieghoff.

sharps4590My 450/400 is a Ruger #1 and I have come up with two loads that are both accurate, fun and light of recoil. I used Hodgon's recipe for Trail Boss but can't recall the charge. As I have two other 40 cal. rifles and molds of 270 gr. and 410 grain I have loaded some of both. The 410 gr. bullet is scary accurate and actually duplicates the BP load in my 40-70 Shiloh Sharps at about 1200 fps. The 270 gr. bullet shoots pretty darn good but not with the 410 gr. bullet. It shoots at about 1550 fps. Either is more than adequate for whitetails.

impala#03I have used TrailBoss in my Ruger #1 with a 400 gr cast bullet at about 1600 fps. I do not know how that would regulate in a double rifle, but may be worth a try.

sharps4590I don't know either impala. That's why I mentioned that load in a # 1. Isn't there a "60% rule" or something like that for doubles that where a percentage of the velocity often regulates in DR's? I want to remember reading that somewhere but given my memory.....

The DaneLee .410-210gr SWC behind 14 gr TrailBoss for @1250fps.
If you dont know what you want (and cant state it!) this ansver is as good as any!
