Accurate 2230-C loading mostly
BOOMOn another thread someone was looking for reccommendations for the best powder in the .223. Well, after going through all my data I found that 2230-C had an edge.
I desided to further test this out.

My barrel foulers were Black Hills Blue Box 55 gr.At 50 yds they produced a 5 shot 3/8" group and a 10 shot 3/4" group.????????

All the rest of the loads used 24.3gr. 2230-C, Black Hills Match brass and WSR primers.

  • 52gr. hpbt speer, oal=2.305", mild, clean, 3225fps. avg.10 shot 3/8" grp 50 yds.
  • 55gr.fbhp, Berger, oal=2.310", clean, mild, 3150fps. avg., 5 shot 1/8" group 50 yds.3/4" 10 shot group at 100 yds.
  • 69gr.hpbt Nosler competition, 3040fps. avg.forgot to record oal but it was touching the rifling, absolutly fantastic.
  • 55gr. Varmint nite mare Mid south, oal=2.330", clean, 20 shots you could cover with a quater at 50 yds.
  • 50gr. psp comp. Don't know what these are or who made them,oal=2.275", 3225fps. avg., 10 shot 3/8" group at 50 yds., clean and ,mild.
  • 50gr tnt, Speer, oal=2.350" clean, mild, 3250fps. avg.XCELLENT.

There was no endeavor to maximize accuracy with best powder charge. The powder was dispensed and not individually weighed!!!roger

Roger, those varmint nightmare bullets pretty good? Feel like experimenting a bit. And I found 2230C good in 45/70 too.

Roger I'm curious why do you seem to do most of your load work at 50 yards?

FrownerI'm 275 pounds, I'm over 70, it is a shorter walk than 100 yds and it is less fatigueing. animalBesides I get smaller groups at 50 yds. beerroger

They are not competition quality but the results from at least 4 local shooters has been very satisfactory. Based on their performance if a whole bunch of varmint ammo had to be loaded this would be the bullet of choice. thumb
