Hornet style loads in a 222rem
Yesterday my neighbour complained when I checked the zero of my hunting rifle. When I start on the 150yards bunnies on our field I'll need to keep muzzle blast to a minimum.

I see that Vihtavuori show 40gr loads with N110 (14.3 to 16.2gr for a MV of 2974 to 3207fps. This is still way above hornet performance, does anyone have any data that is slower and quieter or am I going to have to start crawling closer with my 22rf?

Yep - I have some data using N320 that I will find for you - if I can. They work great and makes your 222rem shoot like a 22WM/22 Hornet - but with even less noice. I load my 8x57 with the same powder and it sounds like a 22lr.

The Lyman cast bullet handload book has reduced loads for almost all commercial rounds. I don't have the book near me, but I am sure it would give you some ideas on which way to go .
Good luck and good shooting

While IMR 4759 is made for what you want to do it will still make noise.

Use a .22 LR. The Remington yellow jacket load really kills well.

Another way to "keep the noise down" is to only fire one shot. People "zero in" on a second shot. On a first shot they are not sure what it was.

You could also make a silencer. Firing thru a tube of insulation should be legal as long as it's not attached to the gun.

Moderators are strictly governed. I had one but tired of the bulk. My 222 is short and handy, I don't want to ruin it with a moderator. I just need to limit the amount of blast to Hornet levels and face away from the neighbour.

If the worst comes to the worst my moderated 22rf is accurate with stingers but not so decisive terminaly... I wanted to have some fun with the new toy.

Menander you have mail.
