Barnes bullets and groupings...
Today I went to the range and shot three round each of same powder, load, primer etc. except for the seating depth. The loads .050 all went thru the same hole, amzaing. The loads .060 and 065 were 2" groupings.

Is this because the rounds may have been seated in the powder?

I'm a bit confused by your "seating depth." Where does the 0.050 (five hundredeths) come from? From where are you measuring 0.050? Can I presume the units are inches?

That would be that the bullet is seated .050 from the start of the rifling in the barrel. ( fifty thousandth's of an inch)

garyn,
Your gun likes bullets seated .050" off the lands, enjoy it. The Barnes TSX in my 375 likes them .040"-.060" of the lands, I just seat them .050" off and smile with every shot.

Grumpy...050 off the lands....060 shot like a shotgun...my 7-08 shot three rounds thru the same hole...awesome bullet.

Cant wait to try it in the field...

I made a similar experience with teh 30/06 and the 130 grains TSX. Seating depth is a critical factor.

You're right that seating depth is important, but so is common sense. I can't tell you how many times I've had clients bring rifles on hunts only to find out they are single shots because they never tried loading the magazine with their .050" off-the-lands loads.

A single hole group is great but in many hunting situations I'd rather have a 2" group than a single shot.

Another wreck in the field I've seen too many times is people mixing up longer than factory COL reloads where the bullet gets stuck in the lands. The loads work fine on the range because people always shoot each round after they close the bolt. But in the field hunters often load the chamber only to unload after a blown stalk. When the bullet is stuck in the rifling you get a face full of power and an unusable gun. I've had that happen with clients so many times I started carrying a brass rod to knock bullets out. But I've found we can't always get all the powder out of the trigger, etc. so they still end up without a rifle for the hunt.

Finding a perfect seating depth is great but keep in mind situations in the field can require different activities than at the range.

I did this with Mrs Blacktailer's 308 Kimber. Got it shooting real well then found out the COL wouldn't fit in the mag. My Rem 700 in 06 has a long throat and a long mag so it doesn't have the same problem but the bullets are only in the case necks about 1/4 inch.
