taylorce1Who Has a 338-06?
He just wanted to know how many people out there have this cartridge. I'm getting very good results with RL-15, CCI Large Rifle primers, and 200 grain Hornady's. I'm almost getting 2800 fps, and I'm sure I could push them a little hotter, but this is where the rifle likes it and so does my sholder. I'm managing 1"-1.5" groups, good enough for the hunting I want to do with it.

My rifle is a custom 1903 Springfield 24" fluted barrel, with a Luepold VXIII 2.5-8X32. What do you have?

onefunzr2Not me.
I've got a 338-06 Ackley Improved with 40degree shoulder. Rem 700 action, Rifle Basix trigger, H-S Precision stock, skim bedded Hart SS 24" barrel with removable muzzle brake. I shoot 200 and 225 grain Barnes X bullets. Was my 'heavy' gun for Namibian plains game in '04. Worked like a dream.

Cold BoreYep, and love it.

Nothing fancy... a Rem M700 with a Douglas barrel.
Shoots great with 200 gr Ballistic Tips and 210 Partitions.
Mine is a Ruger MK 1 with a pac-nor barrel. It thrives on RL-15 and Ballistic Tips.

fredj338Mine is also a tang safety Ruger 77 w/ a VXIII2.5x8. It's my favorite rifle/cart. Your choice of RL15 for 200-210gr bullets is a good one. My best loads have been w/ 54gr RL15 & the 210grNP, gets about 2750fps & I have taken many animals from little African Duiker to elk & a Zebra w/ that load & only recovered one bullet.
I have been playing w/ full cases of H4350 lately & accuracy is even better, sub moa often on good days. Brass is easily made from 06 or Whelen & good factory stamped brass is available in bulk from Norma. You'll be happy w/ it in the field.

ramrod340I have a 338-280IMp. Kind of like an improved 338Gibbs. I use RL15 with 210s and have been having good luck with 2460 and the 200Accubond.
As usual just my $.02

SDhunterI currently have three.
1. Model 700, 22" PacNor barrel, McMillan stock.
2. Model 7600 pump, 270 bored out to 338-06,
3. Springfield 03A3, 23.5" PacNor fluted barrel, original sporterized stock from who knows where.
I have been having really good luck with Rel 15 and Varget with the 200-210gr bullets. My load is only running about 2725fps with the 200 gr Hornady, but it shoots in both gun #1 and #2.
Gun #3 just came home a couple of weeks ago and I haven't had ANY time to go to the rifle range.
I have picked in the last couple of months some 180gr AB's, Win 225gr soft points, Partition golds on sale from Midway, Hornady 250gr RN & FMJ's, and Speer 275gr semi spitzers. I plan on spending a bunch of time at the range this summer playing with all three guns and all the different bullet weights.
That, along with all the 270 load work I plan on doing should cover the rifle work for the summer.
There is also a pretty good thread titled 338-06 users in the medium bore forum that has some good information.

prof242My best friend has one on a Sav 110, talked me into buying an extra bbl for my Sav 110, and I bought an extra bbl for my grandson's Stevens 200 in .25-06 so he now has a .338-06!
Oh, the two old fogey's also have .338 WSMs.

jstevensI have a nice old FN action with a Douglas barrel and a Zeiss scope in Talleys. Great old rifle and plenty of thump with 210's at 2800 fps. Elmer was right about the .333 OKH years ago. Nice moderate recoil hunting rifle.

zeeriverrat1I have 2 338-06AIs..I built both on VZ24 actions..first one has a 24" ER Shaw barrel and I liked it so well that I built a lite weight version with a 19" barrel...
My hunting load for the long barrel version uses IMR4350 and 210gr partitions running at 2775fps, and my short version uses Imr4064 and 200gr hornady bullets running at almost 2600fps... Short or long I love 'em both...

taylorce1Thanks guys, happy to know I'm not the only one who loves this caliber. I have a second 1903 action and was thinking about building another 338-06. I'll let you know how it turns out.
I had one. Rem700 with a Douglas Bbl. topped with a Leupold m8 6x scope and set off by a Shilen Hunting trigger adjusted to about 2 1/2 lbs. Pretty damn nice rifle however, it's since been rechambered to 338WM. Both great cartridges to me.

D HumbargerI too have a 338/06. With 200 & 225s mine really likes R-15 but IMR4320 comes in a close second.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Les StaleyMine I built on a Rem 03, E.R.Shaw 24" barrel Timney trigger, B&C Carbelite stock.. likes 200gr Nosler balistic tips, and 225 gr Hornady interlocks.. A local rancher asked me to come put down two old draft horses last week.. used this rifle.. couldn't get any closer than 150 yds, but one shot each, double lung both of them.. down within 5 seconds each. These animals were bigger than a moose..225gr Hornady pushed by 52 gr IMR 4064, chrono reads 2560fps. groups around an inch.. HTH Les
