Powder vs twist rate in 308 Win?
I am thinking about to purchase a Remington SPS Varmint in .308 Win. I noticed that the rate of twist is at 1-12". I am going to use 150 & 165 grain poly tips. Whats a good middle of the road powder and will a 1-12 twist handle 180 bullets ok?
Thanks

Powders ?? RE 15....Varget..BLC...H4895
Twist ?? I would say the 12 twist would be a bit slow for the 180s...the 10 twist is more suitable clear up to 190s....If you stayed in the 150-165 gr range..the 12 twist would be fine..look at the 155 SMK....Savage puts a 10 twist in their 308s...hint hint..... horse

1:12" should handle 180's but that's kinda the upper limit
for the twist rate.

I'm kinda sorta in the process (on hold) of building a 1:12" twist 30Gibbs which I was optimising for 165's

I've gotta say that <2700fps for a 180gr doesn't exactly excite me...

Propellants?
for 150gr? RL15, Varget, IMR4064, IMR3031
For 165gr? RL15, IMR4350, Varget, N150, IMR3031
For 180's? IMR4350, IMR4064, RL15, IMR4831

But if I had to pick ONE propellant as a "Do-All" for the 308Win? I'd tell you you can just hang it all and get
some W748, but some rifles don't like W748, as some rifles don't like other particular propellants, so you'll have to try it and see...

I think thata a 165gr is the optimum "big" bullet for a 308 if any distance is invloved. As far as 180gr bullets go it will depend on the bullet, the ordinary hunting type bullets should work, but if you are looking at match grade VLD types you might need a faster twist.
