Paul BarnardThis is an interesting thread. Your results are going to be flawed I suspect. Looking for "average" in a reloading forum is akin to looking at a Lexus dealership for some basic transportation. Based on my knowledge of this board and my experience on the range, I'm probably closer to an average and "honest" shooter than some of the other respondants.
This is what I would say is my average (good and bad loads combined) off the bench with a front sandbag at 100 yards. 3 shot groups from bone stock rifles.
Remington 700 VLS 6MM 1.5
Ruger M77 30-06 1.75
Marlin 336CS 30-30 2.0
Marlin 1895G 45-70 1.25
Ruger 77/44 44 mag 3.5 (DIGITAL DAN, I WANT YOUR SECRETS)
Hope this helps.

beemanbemeMany, many years ago Rick Jamison ran an article in Shooting Times (I think) where he sent a whole bunch of guys a pound of 4350 and a box of bullets (30-06 if I remember) -all you had to do was ask. Then you sent the targets to him and he measured them. A whole lot of them. If memory serves me, the overall average was between 2 and 3 inches. A call to Rick Jamison and he might recall or be able to unearth the article.
At a guess, if you were to take the average of ALL the groups of 30-06 ammo I've shot, it would run around 1.25-1.75". The 22-250 -both sporter and heavy barreled- would run .75-1.25" However, the sporter was sorta a out of the box and start shooting thing, while the heavy barreled was worked over quite a bit. I have a 7-08 with a custom barrel from Douglas that put the very first 10 rounds shot thru it into 7/8". I've liked that rifle every since.
I do believe it would be hard to get an average rifle and an average group out of this room. Too many enthusiast (aka gun nuts) that shoot enough that the figures would be skewed.

CollinsIf at first you don't succeed, manipulate the data.
This certainly isn't a scientific study. Pretty much the equivilant of a "napkin sketch" but much better than a WAG.
