browningguyCan someone help with a starting load?
I'm getting ready to load some .300 Sherwood rounds and being a beginner I don't have any type of software to help. The as-cast bullets weigh 144.5 grains average with gas checks. I'd like to get a load that runs around 1400 fps so the Martini's sights will be at least close. It's a straight case and fairly long so I believe I'll need a dacron type filler over the charge which I'm guessing won't fill the case. I'm going back to the library as I thought I found a reference to a load of 14.5 grains of 4351??, in the meantime if any of the experts can help I'd sure appreciate it.

PumpkinheaverI think Handloader magazine did a feature on this cartridge a few months ago but I can find the article. If I find it I will give you any information that I can.

browningguyThanks, you got my brain kickstarted and I just went back and found his recipe. It's a good thing the wife didn't throw all my magazines out when she was cleaning the study. 7.5 grains of blue dot over a 140 gr. bullet. I assume I need to lower this to maybe 6.5 grains and work my way up to 7.5???

PumpkinheaverThat should be fine, I'd rather start low than high. By the way, I wasn't so lucky apperently the old lady must have gotten rid of some of my mags because I couldn't find the article in question.

<Don Martin29>Don't use #4351. That can't be the right powder. Compare the case to something like the 32-20 and get data from an old Lyman Cast bullet handbook. My internal program lists that cartridge but won't run data for us.

browningguythanks DonMartin, I'll give the BlueDot load a try. Should have the new bullets in Tuesday or so, already have the dies and cases, pick up the powder and primers Saturday and I'll be ready.

KLN"7.5 grains of blue dot over a 140 gr. bullet"
You may get better results with the powder under the bullet!
