<M70>Primer cup hardness?
Does anyone know where I can find information on primer cup hardness? I'm not looking for primer intensity, but the force required to ignite the priming material itself.
If I remember correctly, we used the Winchester primer in our M1-A's due to the floating firing pin and the harder cup of this primer. I now have the opposite problem in that I need a soft cup for a specific application.
Any information would be appreciated.
Good hunting,

StonecreekWith the reintroduction of surplus military rifles like the SKS to the market, primer manufacturers are producing special "hard" or thicker primer cups than standard in order to reduce slam-firing.
Since you need to go the other way, I would suggest trying pistol primers. They have plenty of "fire" for rifle applications, but do have generally thinner cups.

<jagtip>Just a note of caution about pistol primers in rifles.I have no personal experience with it but have heard and read that pistol primers have been pierced by rifle primers.Test carefully.Just wanted to pass that along for whatever it's worth.

<jagtip>Correction...I meant to say rifle firing pin.

Magnum MikePistol primers will not stand up to the pressures generated by rifles either......
