.338 Win, 225 grain Barnes XLCs, and H4831
Put 'em all together and what do you get? A reloading recipe that I need! I'm just starting to work up some loads for my .338 Win using Barnes 225 grain XLCs. I was hoping that RL19 would work out since my 6.5X55 does so well with it, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The Barnes manual recommends IMR4831 too, but all I have on the shelf is H4831-SC. Has anybody used this powder and bullet in the .338? How do the IMR and Hodgdon versions compare?

If you haven't worked with this powder, what works in your .338? Any and all input is appreciated.

First of all, "good luck" with those XLC's. I was working with them last week in a SAKO, and quit.

The groups were not too bad, but could not get any velocity out of them. I kept on going to a faster and faster powder, and finally got 2700 with IMR 4320.

Rel 19 was worthless.

BUT< with none coated Barnes X or regular bullets, I use 72 gr of Rel 19 as my standard load.

I think you will find 4831 too slow, and take up too much room in the case.

RL19 never gave me any more velocity over H4350. H4831sc was considerably slower. H or IMR 4350 is a fabulous place to start though I've been revisiting RL22 lately and have been getting about 60 fps faster than H4350 with similar accuracy. My 22" bbl. is spitting the 225's out at 2,925 with RL22 using a Lee Factory Crimp Die.

I am getting 2950 fps out of 225 NP and H4350 powder for my elk load. The same powder works great in my 30-06 as well. Both are very accurate. Max load for the 338, but accurate.
