Bullet drop calculation
Can sombody who knows how to calculate such things tell me how far a .338, 250-grain spitzer bullet fired at 2950 fps would hit below a level barrel at 3,000 yards? (basically, how much would it drop?)

I was able to track it to 1600 yards.....

It dropped (250 yard sight in) 1479 inches and had a energy of 436 ft-lbs and velocity of 886 fps and this assumed a BC of .420

The bullet dropped about 500 inches in the last 200 yards.....

By 3,000 yards it's likely coming down at 45 degrees!!!!!

Energy decay was about 70 ft-lb in the last 200 yards as well.....

At 3,000 yards (1.7 miles), it's not going to be a serious threat to a bad guy!

try different BC values in this software

Well a British sniper just got confirmation that his TWO Taliban kills at 2800 yards is a new sniping record.

I just rounded it off to 3000 yards for effect.

Possibly the weapon was a .50 BMG.....or possibly larger.....do they use a 20 MM?

I've been playing with JBM Balistic trajectory calculator. A 250 grain 338 bullet just won't do that!!!!!!!!

I'm figuring it will go subsonic at around 1,500 yards and who knows what will happen after that.

Even a 338 with a 300 SMK if you could get it to 2,950 would go subsonic at around 2,000 yds.

According to Fox news it was done. No mention of the cartridge used though.

According to a lot of articles on it, the rifle used was an Accuracy International L11583. This rifle is a .338 Lapua, from what I have been able to ascertain.

Here's a link to the NY Post article on it:

Is it possible the bullet core is something heavier than lead.....much heavier?

I doubt that there was any magic bullet nor super secret rifle. The guy was damn good, well practiced (don't forget, it's what he does for a living), and caught a day when time and light came to shine on him.
We all have those kinds of day. Perhaps not at 2800 feet but just good things happen.

338 Lapua (or to use the metric, 8.53x69mm)
