357 Sig bullets ?

357 Sig bullets ?

I was lining up some 9mm brass to do a run of reloading for them and remembered that I didn't think I had much in the way of bullets for the 9mm.

I looked in the closet and found some Speer Gold Dot 9mm 115g .355 boxes and also a Speer Gold Dot 357 Sig 125g. .355 box #3994. I bought that box as I had a Sig P226 with both the 40S&W barrel and the .357 Sig barrel but after shooting the .357 Sig about 25 times with factory ammo I put the 40 barrel in and never took it out. Forgot about the 357 Sig bullets

Question: Why the 357Sig designation on a .355 bullet? Marketing ??

I "thought" I had read it was to help the poor people that thought the 357 sig was .357 not .355. There was a lot of confusion when it first came out.

I don't have a .357 Mag but aren't most bullets for the .357 Mag in the range of .357-358?

Was the .357 Sig really intended to be a 40S&W necked down to a 9mm? My guess is that would be the logical move for Sig to make as they don't have any firearms, that I know, in the .357Mag caliber.

The 357 Sig shoots .355 diameter bullets. The parent case is the 40 S&W, but I believe I have read where ballistician Allan Jones warns not to try make the 357 SIG case from the 40 S&W. The reason eludes me now.

Many people would be shocked to find out that many 38 Specials, 357 Magnums, 38 Super, and other calibers in that diameter range actually have barrels with .355 groove diameters and some even tighter. If you look up the SAAMI specifications on the 38 Special & 357 Magnum you will see what the groove diameter is.

As an aside the 38 Super with +P 130 grain loads equals the 357 SIG

Yep there is no doubt the 38 super can match or even beat the 357Sg. I would much rather have the Super. However the advantage the SIG has is that it will fit the smaller framed pistols the Super won't

I have 3 more boxes of Speer God Dots .357 diam 125g bullets but from what I've heard to shoot .002 oversized jacketed bullets through a 9mm barrel is pushing things a wee big too far.

Any thoughts on that??

Maybe I should see what the actual grove diameter is on the 3 9mm's I have and see if one of them might be a wee bit oversized.

What think ye of that one?

Yeah slug your barrel for groove diameter. If it's same size, or smaller, or .001 larger then your bullets you can load them. If the .001 larger start low and work up.
