45-70 Gov. / 400Gr. Swift A-Frame
Does anyone have experience with the Swift A-Frame 400gr F/N Bullet made for the 45-70. If so what powder/charge are you using. I've just purchsased a Marlin 1895GG.

I have been playing around with this bullet in my Browning 1886SRC and my '70s vintage 1895-336 for about a year. I am using H-322 and H-4198, but, I have not finalized my loads as yet. This bullet will tend to give higher pressures per given load than will a 400 gr. Speer, for example, so, start at 48 grs-H-322 or H-4198 and work up carefully. If, you get to 1850-1900 fps., I would stop there and you will find that the recoil is worse than a .375H&H.

For a premium bullet in the 45/70 I turn to the 400 gr woodleigh flat nose expecially designed for the 45/70. It hangs together really well and expands as well at 45/70 velocity.

I don't have any experience with this bullet, but I do see that Swift lists several loads in their manual for the 45-70 and this bullet.

From Hodgon, they list BL-C(2) at having the highest velocity at 112% (!) at 1691 fps and 50.2 to 54.0 g. H4895 is listed at 99%, 1657 fps, and 44.2 to 47.5g. Varget is also there at 1639 fps, and 45.1 to 48.5g.

From Alliant, they list RL-15 and RL-7. RL-15, 45.1g to 48.5g, and 1650 fps. RL-7, 35.3 to 38.0g, and 1657 fps.

These powders have the highest velocities. The 3 IMR powders listed; 3031, 4064, and 4895, are all under 1600 fps.

In my gun, I had the best luck with H4895. Very accurate, very low SD, all along with excellent velocity.
