I have recently purchased a 300 H&H in pre-64 Winchester and have lots of Barnes X 200 grain bullets (not the new tripple shock - the original Barnes X) that I intend using in this rifle. One of the requirements will be to get the max velocity out of the cartridge as I want to use it on Kudu in the valeys of the Eastern Cape (South Africa). Local data is skimpy - can anyone help with some load data please?

I've had great success with 180 gr Hornady SP pushed by H4831. Accurate (.75") and deadly. I don't use the Barnes copper but I do like the old Barnes origional. If you want a better bullet, the Nosler Acubond has great accuracy and awesome terminal performance. Even better terminal performance comes from the TBBC though they're not as accurate (what's a .25"?) as the Acubond in my rifle. RL22 also shoots well in my 300's.

I use 64 gr of H4350 with the 200 TSXFB bullet. Had pressure signs at 66 gr. Work up.

Also found the 200 A Frame w/63 gr H4350 was a good load. Work up.

Gotta luv that pre 64 300 H&H. Mine goes to Zim in May, gotta choose between the two bullets soon.

I have a Rem 721 in .300 H&H that has two kudu to its credit. The 200-grain load is 70 grains H4831SC / CCI 250 or Fed 215 primer / 2800 fps.

The 180-grain Barnes TSX load I use is as above. Kudu #2 in 2007 was at 281 yards and the Barnes did the job -- quartering on shot in neck and out shoulder. Boom-ka-tha-Whuuup!

IMHO Barnes "X" bullets are a hit & miss proposition as far as accuracy is concerned. Be sure to clean your barrel properly before shooting Barnes bullets as the copper used in standard bullet jackets is harder than that used in the Barnes. In your pre-64 that means several cleaning attempts are necessary with at least two kinds of solvent so as to prevent excessive copper fouling. A nylon bore brush is also must when using a copper cutting solvent as the standard phosphor bronze brush will just melt leaving a green copper residue everywhere.
