FourTails.458 Lott
My reloading books don't show any reloading data for the .458 Lott. I would like to know what the difference is between the .458 Winchester Magnum and the .458 Lott? I know the reasoning for the Lott is being able to stuff more powder in the case. Also, the .458 Lott is supposed to digest the .458 Winchester Ammo (practice purposes, of some kind?). And there have been numerous posts, mine included, about changing a .458 Winchester Magnum over to a .458 Lott. Naturally I misplaced the info, forgot where the other posts were located, and again would like to know. And "NO" I'm not going to tatoo the information on my arm this time!

Again, all help appreciated. Thanks, Mike

700 nitrobasic differences
458 win mag has a 2.5 " case the 458 lott has a 2.800 case
the 458 is more suted to 450 grain bullets and lighter in order to achive proper dg hunting velositys the 458 lott will reach 2300+ alot easyer with a 500 bullet with out heavy compression of the powder.
you can have a gn smith ream your chamber with a 458 lott reamer for about 50 bucks and it works great.
i had a 458 lott ruger 1 and it was a very well made accurate rifle but sold it so i could replace it with a more suitable elephant hunting gun the sercy 500 nitro express.

Rich ElliottHas anyone used WW 748 in the Lott? I've been using 93 grains of WW748 behind the old Hornady 500 Grain FMJ bullets for years. We used this in all of the company rifles and I use it in my own. Back in 1988 Chet Brown brought a .458 Lott reamer with him on his hunt at my request. He was then using WW 748. That's what got me started with it. 93 grains seems okay. Primers are okay and no sticky cases....even in the 90 to 100 degree heat. I'm not sure if Chet is still recomending that powder or not. Seems when he reached 97 grains his rifle blew up! Guess that was a bit too much

Of course, the usual caveat applies to the 93 grain load. I have yet to shoot it through the screens. Haven't shot the rifle in a number of years and with the elephant campaign behind us now I probably won't.
