Im looking at getting a new progressive press. Something nice.

The main reason is for reloading for the .223. I have about 1000 odd cases.

Powder is H322.

Q. is. What is a good reliable powder measure/thrower for this use and powder?

Dillon 650.....look no further

Joe at RealGuns did a comparison between a $60 RCBS and a $225 Harrels. You can look it up yourself and use the $165 savings for something else.

You may be able to throw a consistant charge with an RCBS, but you can't return to a setting anywhere near as accurate as with the "clicks" of the Harrel's. Once recorded, the clicks will always be the same, every time.

Try the quick measure. It will hold .1 grain and they make an adapter that will fit on a progresive press. They also have a device that will prevent powder bridging. http://www.quick-measure.com

I have the RCBS and the Harrel's, the Harrel's is just in another league. The difference between a Yugo and a Bentley.

There probably isn't that big a difference in the charges they throw, but I checked them both frequently for a while--I have a laboratory grade digital scale which really tells the tale--and the Harrel's was measurably more consistent.

I don't use my RCBS at all any more, but I don't use my Harrel's a lot, I have taken to doing most of mine with the Pact Digital Precision system, but that ain't working on a progressive!

I have heard great things about the measure smalstuf mentioned--the Quick Measure-- I don't have one, but the reports I have seen are all good.

The Lee perfect measure gets really great reviews from some of the Bench rest and Highpower crowd too, and it is some cheap.

Whats the diff between the Dillon 650 and 550? Also, The dillon comes with a powder thrower. Are they as good as any of the others.?
They look like the Rolls Royce of presses.

Go with the Dillon 650. I have had one from their introduction and I have loaded 10K's with it. Very satified.

Is it mainly a press for loading pistol ammo? Can it use small base dies, which usually require a bit of grunt. And does it use standard dies?

Forget about the powder measure.....it comes with the dillon 650. It's a great press for the 223 and uses regular dies.

It will also do pistol rounds and larger rounds too like the .30-06 etc.

The dillon 650 is automatic and the 550 requires you to rotate the shell holder manually. Both are fine presses but the 650 is totally automatic. It even has a case feeder that works pretty well.....all you do is add a bullet with the left hand and turn the handle with the right hand. You get a loaded round every 5 seconds.

With H-322 or any of the ball powders it throws powder w/n .1 grain all day long.
